Laura. says:
your argument has zero substance, and just because you don't use one, and the artists you listen to don't either, dosn't make them pointless.
the color shane's in the studio says:
Are you getting payed to play one? Im just saying you should buy a bass that suits your style not what you think is good
Laura. says:
no, your saying they are lame and pointless. your changing the basis of your argument, thats not what you said

Laura. says:
p.s.... you don't get to play with miles davies if your crap, which marcus miller has

*He signs out*

What do you all think?

/\ that was harsh and uncalled for, she was just looking for sum support for the 5 string court and the marcus miller court.

I wouldn't say MM was one of the best players, but he's certainly one of the best slap bass players (which are not the same at all)

and yeah why not have 5, atm i only have 4 but im in the market for a 5.

Why do have to play the same as the artists you like, why not play like them and then better it, or better still just be yourself with ur playing

I've been playing metal in a band for the little more than one year I've played bass, and I find 5-strings pretty pointless.

You're awesome, and your one full year of experience makes you more than qualified to give those sorts of opinions. This board is fortunate to have people like you with a depth and breath of experience to inform us of the necessities of bass. Kudos to you, good sir.

Dude, 5 strings aren't pointless or they wouldn't make them. There's obviously a market for them, maybe not in the metal world, but go up to Jimmy Johnson or Tom Kennedy and tell them that and they'll probably pee their pants laughing at you.

It really depends on what you play, your style of playing, and overall experience with the bass. Anyone who spends 2 years playing bass and says that there's no use playing anything else but what they're used to is really limiting their horizons IMO.

So besides all this troll calling these people have said, I'm actually going to put my point in.

I never thought I needed a B string, and that if I got one it would give my guitarist an excuse to make me ride it like crazy. Now that I have a five stringer, I think it's nice to be able to run a full two scale octave without moving my wrist much. I'd rather have it tuned E-C, but I don't plan on doing that anytime soon.

So if you want a fiver, get a fiver. Don't let someone tell you what to do.

Five string basses are not just pointless--they're dangerous! They are ruining all good music. They are destroying the institution of marriage and the family. They start forest fires. They recruit. They are undermining America. And I admit, I played one. Once, when I was young, but I didn't inhale.

And I won't even get started on Marcus Miller, except to remind you all of the tsunami a couple of years back. "Natural" disaster my butt. Stop shaking the earth, Mr. Miller!
