Seems to me mods should be looking to squash this kinda stuff, not encourage it.

If this person is someone you respect, take his opinion for what it's worth, whatever that might be. IMO, it's ok to learn from someone else's experience (no swimming in the ocean while bleeding) but something as subjective as which basses are relevant or useful, you can ask but you may be better served deciding yourself. From you responses to your friend I suspect you already have.

i play a 5'er. I play alot of reggae, lots of root-5-octave stuff. i found it easier to play it up the neck using the B string for the lows. when playing fast it is easer with the smaller spacing of the frets up-neck. Plus i really like the tone of the fatter string on roots.

play what feels best for you.

+1 I had my experience too with some idiot metal head( I'm a metal head myself ,but sadly the majority is rather stupid...) who was bashing bass and funk in general with the whole no talent thing and how the whole guitar has more strings so it's hard concept. The usual insults and remarks we get ,right? I just argued a little then I thought to myself "Why the hell am I wasting my time with this idiot?" The best thing to do was leave, so I did.

Remember this, there are a ton of idiots, nothing to argue about.

thanks. i make mistakes sometimes, just like everyone else. i think this is a case of one of those mistakes coming back to stalk..i mean haunt me.

besides, this thread is much too boring as it is. need some extra OT stuff to spice it up . in fact, i'll be moving it to OT, just to get those guys in on the fun too.
