Time for you to grow up. I know that, being young, everything that others say, ESPECIALLY your peers (we all know that adults are clueless and have wasted all their time and experience on the earth till now), gives you anxiety lest you be considered out of the mainstream and "uncool."

And if you run across another kid who has a strong opinion about something, it rocks your world.

But sooner or later you have to think for yourself and realize that another's opinion, no matter how strongly held, is JUST an opinion and need not be accepted on the face of it without further consideration on your part.

In short, who the **** cares what "the color shane's in the studio" has to say? Sounds like a little snot-nosed punk, anyway.

Basses are crayons in the box.
Each have a different tone, and color.

There is no right or wrong.

4s, 5s, 6s, all are useful configs and work for the individual users who want to use them. anyone who maintains that one is crap or better than the others is expressing an opinion, not fact.

A couple hundred years ago before the electric bass the double basses went down to A then the new innovation was adding a low E to the bass ... now a low E is standard ... how many basses are there that only go down to A? Heck these days you can get a bass with a low F#

So I think we are seeing an era where more and more players are going to 5 string basses. The extra string comes in handy for country, jazz, blues, modern rock, metal and many other forms of music.

Maybe somewhere in the future the 5 string bass will be the standard and the 4 string be a historical fotnote.

Funny! Look, after playing for well over 30 years, I could care less if you play a 29 string bass....makes no difference to me. Me? I use 4. All I've ever needed. However, to say that they "aren't needed" is a little goofy. I mean, to each his own. Have fun! If it takes you more that 4....good for you!!

I played one once, too but unlike a rather "infamous" bass player...I DID inhale......profusely....

Dont agree with most everything else he said but his quote from above is exactly right. Can't say I agree with Laura's point either.. Name dropping doesn't help justify the number if strings that is needed..

P.S. I'm not an anti-4+ stringer as I personally play 5 and 6 strings.

Can I say something? Uh, dhurrr. I have a 5 string bass just so I can play along with the guys who like the drop D, or C# even. Don't like to de tune my 4's, so the 5 takes care of it. Ok, carry on with your bashing of the young lady.

I think that maybe calling a beginner a troll might not be the best way to help her develop a love of the low end. I admit that I thought it was trollery when I first read it as well, but now I feel kinda badly about that.

Laura, it's never a good idea to just post an exchange like that.. It gets people's dander up and, well... you see what happens. What I read into that exchange is that the person on the other end might be jealous that you're looking into getting whet he or she might think of a fancier some way than what he or she has -- or something. I don't really know, but I read some jealousy into it somehow.

But I agree with Bobby kokinos: he or she said *one* intelligent thing. The number of strings doesn't really matter, it's about what you think fits. Find the bass that speaks to you and buy it, even if you have to save up for it forever.
