More so if stripping it down one neck screw strips the screwdriver slot and another neck screw snaps off while undoing it.

Similar thing happened to a screw in my 75 P bass when I was replacing the bridge. The head of the screw completely twisted from the stem and it remains in one of the holes for the bridge. Luckily, this bass is far from original, anyways, but still, it sucks.

Also, the dude said he'd take $1500 for it? Throw him a bone and give him $3k-$5k. Also, if it's a refinished bass, I wouldn't do more than $5k on it, sadly.

Good deals still do happen, and the market is weird right now. Old Fender basses are rarely selling for five figures anymore unless they're mint. To be honest, the guy might be happier with $3k cash in his pocket rather than waiting for it to sell on Ebay/Reverb at $10k for a year or more. It might be hard to wrap your head around, but some people just don't care.

While we all hope that this bass has been lovingly cared for, never modified and kept in it's original case except for when the one owner took it out to play in church on Sundays, at this point I have no information at all other than the owner says it is a 52.

It is more likely that it is not in mint condition and some parts have been replaced. It could have been taken on multiple tours by an 80's hardcore band for all we know!

Spinal Tapper your point is valid. Just because there are similar instruments listed online for 15K doesn't automatically mean that this one could fetch that price. I do wonder about the market for vintage instruments. Just like muscle cars, at some point there won't be that many baby boomers willing to pay the big prices.

My drummer is checking to see if we can look at it before next Tuesday. Thanks to everyone for your input and thoughts so far.

Even if it's not 100% original, try and scoop that thing up! All 3 of my pre-CBS Fenders have had refinishes / modifications, and really, it just makes them more prone to being gigged constantly as they were intended. One day, I may restore them, but for now, they get gigged.

I've been looking for a "project" 50's Fender for a long time, now. Please drop me a PM if you decide to pass this deal along ;)

I'm with you there. I'd much rather have something I could gig with.
When I was looking for an upright, I was hoping to find an old beat up Kay. But there are only so many of those around and I ended up finding a great deal on a virtually new Englehardt (which is the modern equivalent) The finish was flawless because it hadn't really been played much.
6 years of gigging and jams later, it's finally starting to get some wear and character.
