62 Jazz...$950

arghhh...the first pic in that ad shows the pickguard mounted on a body, with the neck attached. i hope they're not parting out an actual '62 bass...
For $950 this tort have better have been harvested from the personal tortoise of John Entwistle...
And still I am pretty sure there is some idiotic collector guy thinking to buy it, there is actually one watching it

Yes, I'm afraid they are doing just that. The same seller is selling a '62 body, neck, tuners and bridge. I guess the control plate and pickups already sold. Really too bad.
I actually have an original tortoiseshell pickguard that I removed from a 62 Fender jazz bass in the late 70's. It will no longer fit without considerable trimming and screw hole modification... Something about the picture of that one on the bass strikes me a bit funny. The holes for the pickup cover do not line up, and if you look closely there is a large gap between the pickup and the guard towards the bridge...

An authentic guard would have shrunk so that the screw holes would be offset in the opposite direction. The body in that image appears to have shrunk... not the guard ???

Definitely not a true 62 neck either... It should have a slab fret-board flat on bottom where it bonds to the neck. This is a picture of the butt of a real 62 neck...

Yes... they are somewhat serrated... some type of milling marks left by the machine that cuts it out.
I have replaced my pick guard on my 71 P a couple of times as well as the pots, nut, bridge and pickup (although I did keep the originals).

I've been on Reverb a lot lately. The price ranges for things are all over the place, and it's easy to see why some items have been listed for a long time with no sales or offers....I think this one takes the cake though.

@BooDoggie beat me to it, but I was wondering how those screw holes were so absolutely perfect on a 55 year old pick guard, you'd expect at least a little uneven wear or stretch from shrinkage. Could be legit, if so, I'll have to save up a little more, I just spent $73,000 on a '62 jazz bass control plate from some guy on reverb, only $12 shipping!
