$67 Glarry P-Bass

I received my Burlywood bass that I am gifting to a friend. The box came perfectly fine with no damage. The only issues with the bass itself were the pickups were not sitting glued into the black plastic chassis, so you couldn't see the metal cylinders poking through the plastic holes. If you lifted the bass upside down you could get them to fall in place only temporarily. Regardless of that it still played through an amp no problem. I had to take the pickguard off and put some super glue to keep the pickups inside the plastic chassis thing. Only super minor issue is the metal plate on the back of the bass that secures the neck screws was kinda scratched looking, but who cares. There is also a slight buzzing on the 2nd fret G string, but that may simply be a setup thing. I raised the action just a touch on the G and that got rid of it unless you really play hard on it. All strings are at 2mm and below at the 12th fret. The neck seems pretty straight. Intonation wasn't super perfect, but fine enough for casual playing and not all that noticeable. Played it for an hour and didn't go out of tune. The neck is super beefy and thick like a baseball bat, which is a common comment on reviews. Seriously the thickest neck I've played on a bass. May not be perfect choice for small or weak hands, especially for beginners. Overall this bass is a super crazy value for the price and recommend it.

I am pissed that while I was removing the pickguard I dropped my screwdriver and gave the wood a dent. So it is sensitive to damage it seems. Good thing it was only $67!

So you don't like the name of the guitar ?

the SupaGlue Fix was a mistake, I’m afraid.
You needed to put springs or rubber tubing over the screws yet under pick ups or stiff foam underneath the pickups themselves.

The internation is just a question of tightening the saddle screws (at the rear of the bridge plate itself) if they are too sharp at the 12th fret or vice versa if they’re too flat
But otherwise it seems a great gift from a generous friend

I just got my Glarry J style bass last night.
No shipping problems.
The low E seems a bit high at the nut, but I only notice when fretting the first fret...after that it seems ok.
Intonation was within a few cents on all strings.
The bridge pickup needed some adjustment.
Holy sh-wow! This thing is light.
Action was ok out of the box.
All things considered, I received a fairly playable bass.
Thanks for this thread!

It even came with the desired quantity of frets.

I’m tempted to get a jazz type now!

I got mine in today, made it through shipping but the string tree had pulled out of the head wood so I super glued a toothpick into the hole, used a very small .5mm drill bit to make a pilot hole, then re-installed the string tree.
I cleaned up the wiring due to very loud buzz, now mostly gone except at some playing angles when the pickups are not volume balanced. I want humbucking jazz pickups.
There is a small crack at the very end of the fretboard, no problem, some walnut wood filler will fix that.
Some raised frets, and can't get the intonation set with the D string without fret buzz.
I'm going to have to start all over and do a complete finishing job on the frets then try again.

But that's ok, I got the guitar to practice Luthier skills on a cheap bass. A touch of growl but got what I really wanted it for. Oh and also I will reshape the neck and even trim a good bit of width off of it. Lots of YouTube videos on how the reshape a D neck into a Fender C neck. Not too difficult but will take some time since I don't have the power tools and shop.
Looks exactly like the one above, it's a real wow for $70.

I think what I will do is trim the fat from the sides of the D curve by rasping then sanding smooth a bit at a time until I get it the way I would like. That way I am less likely to go too far and have to buy a replacement neck. For those who find it too thick and don't want to try, there are many finished (?) necks on Ebay for about $50 USD.

I'm not sure it would be easy to trim 1/8 to 3/16 off each side of the neck with the frets installed. I think trimming each fret off with a thin diamond Dremel wheel would take the frets off, but likely to dig into the fret board. And the big one, the frets would be staggered. Filing it off in the direction of the neck parallel sounds like a try but may work the frets loose.
I need to consult an expert on this.

Sounds great on an Ampeg BA210-V2 sitting on top of a BSE115T cabinet but the pickups seem a bit weak. Ok new mod, a passive/active switchable amp on Ebay for about $25. Or else just take advantage of the huge overhead I have on amp power.

Yes I would like to start by shaping it more like a gentle rounded V shape but on the other hand (huh) it seems to be improving my reach with my thinner necks. I could call this the ultimate plucks per penny (I can't resist puns) but I did swing Guitar Center, played some Fenders and well I see one in my future.

Nice! Lucky you get the 20 fret model! Those seem to be the better models. I really like that grainy look to it and I usually don't like burst type finishes. Looks better than my black one! Does the back of it look like that too?

Glad to see and hear that you did well! It looks beautiful. Any nut-related concerns besides the apparent high slot on the E string? I had to shim the nut on my J, and I’m still working on it.

One thing I thought might be bad before receiving it is the perfection of all the notes being in tune. None of them are even 1/2 cent off, all right on. The tuner in the BP90 pedal is very sensitive so I would know for sure they are all ok. Even up at the last few frets. So if you think you have frets that are not right on in pitch, it's probably intonation that needs adjusted.

Do the $10 Ebay pick guards fit this bass, especially the neck heel ? I would think the Fender heel would be more narrow.

I'm getting used to the fatter neck and even like it now, but the strings have to go. Much too coarse and noisy. Fender 7150 and 7250 L and XL are MUCH finer winds that are much easier on the fingers and a lot less squeaky.
I'm tempted to try some D'Addario half rounds or maybe even some Fender flat wounds. The pickups are bright enough to take some dimness from flats.
