One of my co-workers wanted a cheap bass to play around with. He's a guitar player, but wanted to learn to play bass. I told him about the Glarry and he ordered one. I told him I'd set it up for him.
Upon first inspection, I noticed some buzzing caused by a high 19th fret, but other than that it seemed fine considering the prices.
I got it home and stripped it down to put some Tru-Oil on. The factory finish looks like nothing more but a sanding sealer. There isn't any sort of finish on the neck. The back of the neck had some dings and scratches and the back of the body had two good sized dings in it.
The pots feel fine and work fine. And the pickup seems to be pretty good. Not a lot of big bottom end, but it's not awful. The bridge was properly grounded.
The tuners are really poor. I mean...they are crap. I greased them because they were hard to turn even off the bass. That didn't help much. The rosewood board was bone dry and it soaked up guitar honey like crazy.
The neck pocked had TWO shims in it and it was excessive. Saddle height was sky high to compensate. I removed one of the shims and lowered the saddles. The bridge, like the tuners, is crap. I thing a couple of the intonation screws were bent and the saddle height screws appeared to be rusted. I had to break them loose to turn them.
The nut was a little high, but not enough for me to fool with. Frets were not sharp on the ends and there is no fret sprout. That was surprising.
After about 5 coats of tru-oil on the neck and head stock, I lightly sanded the back of the neck and waxed it. I threw on some used Labella Deep Talkin' flats I had laying around (basically added 50% value to the bass! LOL!) and did a set up.
I couldn't get the action super low, but a good fret dressing would more than likely fix that. I don't have the tools to do it.
All in all, you're a set of tuners and a bridge away from a really decent bass and add in a fret dressing and you might have a pretty good bass. But then you're looking at spending $150-$200 on parts and fret dress and you can't pick up a Classic Vibe P for that money and it's a better bass.
If you are buying a bass to screw around on, or for a beginner, this sucker is fine. Really amazing for the money.
