$67 Glarry P-Bass

Hey @Ronzo, would you mind sharing with us the link to a pickguard that fits on the P? I’m having a lot of very promising time modding mine, but a fitting pickguard remains elusive.

Just about done making these inexpensive basses play well and look as I wanted them to look.

On the J: stock pickups, Musiclily tort pickguard, Chinese pickup and bridge covers. Total investment, including the bass = > $90.00 USD.

On the P: Fender Original pickup, Musiclily tort pickguard, Bourns 14mm pots, Sprague .047 mfd cap, Switchcraft output jack, Fender knobs, Chinese pickup and bridge covers. Total investment, including the bass = > $203.00 USD.

The P required much less work to make it play well. Actually, I could have lived with the stock electronics - not with the stock pickguard, though. Ick!

They sound great through all of my rigs.

thanks GretschWretch,
ahh no, I just made it up as I went a long got no idea what I was going to do. Just threw on the drums and ran with it :). The other one was also on the fly just followed the chords and the notes with in :)

Thanks I appreciate you saying so :) Just stick with it, it gets easier. I was in a original hair metal band and was a pick player for many years, It wasn't till retiring from the road did I try to bring finger style technique into my bag of tricks.

I started on upright as a small child (9) and my approach to finger style was from that, which isn't correct for electric bass, but I did what I could to improve it. :bassist:

Ah! hair metal. That explains all the wild child licks.

As requested, here is a link to the tort pickguard for the P:

Please note that I described fitting the pickguard in my original post for the P-bass. It had to be re-cut to fit the neck heel, and all of the mounting holes were NOT in the original screw locations.

Ordered a burleywood P just because it’s an awesome name haha. Actually, I currently have a PJ and a J but no P yet and for $75 shipped, why not? I might get the Jazz too. I love that someone is finally making a Jazz with a thick neck and larger nut width! I hate the toothpick neck on Jazz basses, swapping a P on to a J is just more money, so I have just lived with it. This is the answer Ive been looking for and it’s dirt cheap.

Just got mine today! This bass addresses two issues Ive always had with P basses but lived with, weight and neck size. This is probably the lightest bass Ive ever played, its unreal. Its lighter than the tiny little Ibanez Mikro with a 28.6" scale. Its even lighter than any hollow body Ive ever played too. Never thought Id find a P bass this light. I really like the neck on this thing, nut width and string spacing is perfect IMO and the profile reminds me of the rounded 50s Gibson necks, nice and beefy. I much prefer it to the Fender modern C necks. I can't believe they made their Jazz bass with a big neck like this either, I hate the toothpick necks on Jazz basses, so Im definitely ordering one now.

I really like the pickup too because its a brighter sounding P bass pickup and I no longer have to turn my treble up to 3 o'clock to get a brighter tone like I do with other Ps I have had. I would say its Fender P bass sounding about 50% on the tone knob and with it wide open, it brightens up and almost sounds like a cross between a P and a J IMO. Could also be the stock strings playing a role in that. I am swapping those out for some Fender 7250Ms tomorrow, I will play that for a few days and see what I think, but Im thinking an SD Quarter Pound would sound awesome in this. Bridge and tuners are ok for now. Even if you were to upgrade the bridge, tuners, pickups and electronics, you would have a killer bass for what? $400 total? Unreal that this thing is only $69.

Congrats, @mbell75 ! It appears you were lucky enough to get a 20 fret neck, too. Much better build quality with the 20 fret version.

Give the existing pickup a good workout. You may find you like it. I have Quarter Pounders in a MIM Fender P. It’s a different tone. I also replaced the Glarry pickup with a Fender Original. That might not have been necessary.

Thanks. I didn’t know there was a different version of this bass. 21 frets? How does it differ?

Take a look at the earlier posts in this thread by @merseymale . His was/is a 21 fret neck with no compensation in the neck pocket for the longer neck. As a result, the bridge and the tuners are not in the typical place, and there is significant neck dive.

I was lucky. So are you. Your Burlywood finish looks good to me. I’d much rather be lucky than good.

Interesting. I wonder if the newer ones are the 20 fret models. I hear they have new body styles coming this year. Hopefully that means a PJ is coming.
