Okay, so I pulled the trigger and bought one. Initial thoughts:

  • Much, much better quality than I expected. I ordered the “bassywood” because I imagined the clear finish would prompt them to select nice pieces of wood, and I was not disappointed. No black marks or knots at all, just handsome grain.
  • The neck is straight and true. Just underfinished. I think it had maybe a single wipedown of linseed oil before shipping. Fine by me, as I will finish to my taste.
  • The nut is the first thing that needs replacing. Cheap, soft plastic, without the radius and string spacing of the Fender pbass. No biggie.
  • Really light. As others have commented, you could wear this all day and hardly notice. Neckdive city, but fortunately I always play with a strap, even seated. Balances just fine on the strap.
  • Glarry’s ordering system is a little bit...messed up? First I ordered a P Bass, and the receipt showed a Jazz. I asked them to cancel that order, and was told “it will be ameliorated”. So I ordered for the second time and received TWO P basses. Apparently, “ameliorated” did not mean “cancel as requested”, but “I’ll change the Jazz to a P”. Naturally, I returned the second one.
  • The bass has absolutely no indicators of its country of origin. The only markings are the Glarry logo, so lightly applied I’ll bet it will come off with a few swipes of Goof Off. I raise an eyebrow at the legality of this.
Overall, I’m more than pleased. In the house renovation business, they refer to a property as having “good bones,” meaning a solid foundation for improvements. This has excellent bones.

Looking forward to taking it apart and tweaking it back up. I’ll post my progress.

"Circle of Tone" is an excellent youtuber who recently reviewed the Glary bass, as did "Trogly's Guitar Show".

Reviewers are mystified how these things are made and shipped for under $100. May just be an upgrade to CNC's in China, or it could be a horror scene of child labor in their factories.

Quality appears to be about equivalent of SX.

We are family... I got all my sisters and me...

Just about done making these inexpensive basses play well and look as I wanted them to look.

On the J: stock pickups, Musiclily tort pickguard, Chinese pickup and bridge covers. Total investment, including the bass = > $90.00 USD.

On the P: Fender Original pickup, Musiclily tort pickguard, Bourns 14mm pots, Sprague .047 mfd cap, Switchcraft output jack, Fender knobs, Chinese pickup and bridge covers. Total investment, including the bass = > $203.00 USD.

The P required much less work to make it play well. Actually, I could have lived with the stock electronics - not with the stock pickguard, though. Ick!

They sound great through all of my rigs.

Dang! I’m being Lazy with my bass!

Any affect on finish?

None. Those pictures are before and after, with no sanding or other surface prep. I let the Goof Off sit for about a minute, then swirled around with a paper towel. More and more of the logo swirled off in an inky cloud with each application. Soon it was all gone.

Seriously, it’s like they want you to anonymize these.

Or they want people to come up and ask you what bass it is.

“What kind of bass is that?”

“Glarry.”

“Yes, it’s glary in here. Maybe that’s why I can’t see the make or model.”

“Glarry!”

“Yes, we’ve established that...”

“GLARRY! I SAID GLARRY!!”

“Jeez. Typical prima donna musician attitude!” (Walks away.)

"And where is it made?"

"GLARRY, Indiana I said GLARRY, Indiana Glarry, Indiana, that's my home!"
