$67 Glarry P-Bass

It sounds like a J bass. Pickups are serviceable, but low output relative to the DiMarzio Model J pickups in my MIM Fender Jazz. I’m not planning on changing them, nor any of the electronics. To my old ears, it sounds good.

Yea, this one has low output pickups too and not much punch which is why I was thinking about putting a Quarter Pound in it. Can’t complain for the price at all. I’ll give it a few more days playing with it though.

Raising the pickup might give you more power, at the expense of definition or “sweetness”. Measure the height currently if you try that, so you can return it to its original position if you don’t like the sound.

Just got mine today! This bass addresses two issues Ive always had with P basses but lived with, weight and neck size. This is probably the lightest bass Ive ever played, its unreal. Its lighter than the tiny little Ibanez Mikro with a 28.6" scale. Its even lighter than any hollow body Ive ever played too. Never thought Id find a P bass this light. I really like the neck on this thing, nut width and string spacing is perfect IMO and the profile reminds me of the rounded 50s Gibson necks, nice and beefy. I much prefer it to the Fender modern C necks. I can't believe they made their Jazz bass with a big neck like this either, I hate the toothpick necks on Jazz basses, so Im definitely ordering one now.

I really like the pickup too because its a brighter sounding P bass pickup and I no longer have to turn my treble up to 3 o'clock to get a brighter tone like I do with other Ps I have had. I would say its Fender P bass sounding about 50% on the tone knob and with it wide open, it brightens up and almost sounds like a cross between a P and a J IMO. Could also be the stock strings playing a role in that. I am swapping those out for some Fender 7250Ms tomorrow, I will play that for a few days and see what I think, but Im thinking an SD Quarter Pound would sound awesome in this. Bridge and tuners are ok for now. Even if you were to upgrade the bridge, tuners, pickups and electronics, you would have a killer bass for what? $400 total? Unreal that this thing is only $69.

That’s Wonderful!
A N D it looks like your neck Bridge, etc, is in the right place too!

Although I’m a big fan of upgrading (for upgrade’s sake sometimes!?) I’m inclined to think that -in your case @ least- “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it…“

Still, it’s up to YOU:bassist:

Interesting. I wonder if the newer ones are the 20 fret models. I hear they have new body styles coming this year. Hopefully that means a PJ is coming.

You seem well informed!
I hope you’re right...

On the bright side I got half my money back and got to keep the bass too because of its “defects” and I’m having lots of fun tinkering with it!

Thanks. Well, new strings go on tomorrow and I will give it a few days or more and really get a feel for the stock pickup. Ive wanted a new project bass, especially with a QP and this would be a great bass for it since it cost next to nothing. Ive spent twice as much on one pedal

I got mine direct from Glarry. I heard some of the ones on Ebay are knockoffs, especially the ones with no name on the headstock. Don't know who would want to copy such a cheap bass but I guess it happens ha.

Newsflash: two of mine, including one of the better ones, have bare headstocks, and I got mine all between April and July of 2017. I suspect the reality is more like what we had with the Japanese jobbers in the sixties: many guitars and basses from a few factories, with lots of different headstock badges depending on the U. S. distributors' house brand.

My short Glarry p-bass update:

In the "just because" column:
1. Added a beefier no name bridge that was laying around - no expected or realized sound difference...just looks beefier...and beef is good!
3. Strings = EB Hybrid - not looking to ignite a string debate - my default.
4. Coming tomorrow via magic delivery...pup upgrade = EMG GZR P
Planned: changing Glarry on the headstock to Glarr (ruler of the planet Omicron Persei 9)
Will be ready to bang the crap out of by Guitar Friday..(I am no longer active..so I afford myself quality beer / bbq / bass guitar time on Fridays)

Update on my Glarry P...Had the GC tech I’ve been using for years go over it today. Neck was pretty straight, just needed a small tweak. Frets were good, nut was fine and intonation was pretty spot on. Pickups were completely straight and too low, I raised and adjusted them to proper P angle. Oiled the fingerboard and it looks nice and dark, still not positive it’s rosewood but looks a lot like it. New 7250M strings sound awesome on it. Still haven’t decided if I’m going to put the Quarter Pound in or not. The stock pickup sounds pretty good and I like how it can get a bit brighter than your average P bass with the tone knob opened up. Incedible deal for $69! Waiting on my Glarry Jazz now!
