86 Jackson Help

I recently purchased a 86 neck thru with P and humbucker pickups. The original preamp was taken out, bass is now passive with 2 volume and tone, toggle switch bypassed. Right now the bass sounds like crap, if I use my external Sadowsky preamp it sounds better.
How good are the Jackson pickups, how should the humbucker in bridge position sound?
If I upgrade what pickups and preamp. Thinking of new pickups and 3 band preamp

If you are going to replace them, I'd go with EMGs, because it was normally what Jackson used back then. If you just wanted to change them without worrying about that, I;d go with either Bartolinis or Basslines.

Oh, and no pic = no bass, so let's see what you're referring to.

I would keep the stock pickups and find a J-2000 preamp then dump the toggle switch and install a blend pot but that's just my preference

I'm curious if they were jackson branded EMG selects in there. I remember Jackson using those pickups back then.
