A 4x10 and a 2x10. Is this good?

That should work, but you will need to pay attention to the impedance rating (in ohms) of each of your cabs, as well as the minimum load capacity of your head. Many 4x10's are 4-ohm cabs, and many 2x10's are 8-ohm cabs. In regards to ohms, the lower the number, the higher the current flow (the harder the amp has to work). If you combine a 4-ohm cab and an 8-ohm cab, you will get a 2.67-ohm load. This works out well for the cabs, because the 4x10 will see twice the power that the 2x10 "sees," and each 10" driver will be pushed about as hard as the others. However, many amps have a 4-ohm minimum rating, so this 2.67-ohm load is not going to be good for the amp.

Now, if both cabs are rated at 8-ohms, then they would combine to make a nice 4-ohm load for the amp. However, since each enclosure will be receiving the same amount of power from the head, the 10" drivers in the 2x10 are being driven twice as hard as the 10" drivers in the 4x10. Some cabs can handle this, but many times, this leads to blowing drivers in the 2x10.

Do you know the impedance rating of your cabs and the minimum load capabilities of your head?
 
The math is correct but most 4x10's are 8 ohms and most 2x10's are 4 ohms.

My experience has been that the opposite is true. However, I've certainly seen both configurations come in both impedances, so it is definitely worth finding out the deets on the cabs in questions.
 
You want to run the 410 as a 8ohm and the 210 as an 4ohm that way the 410 will get more power than the 210 and if all speakers are the same wattage, equal distribution of power between all speakers

Not quite,

You want the 410 as a 4 Ohm and the 210 as an 8 Ohm, or really the 210 just double the impedance of the 410. That way 2/3 of the power will go to the 410 and 1/3 will go to the 210.

The way you have it laid out, 2/3 of the power will go to the 210, and 1/3 to the 410 making the power distribution even worse than if both cabs were 8 Ohms.
 
glad i caught this converstaion,...my situation is similar,...ive got a genz benz shuttle 9.2 amp (900 watt at 4 ohms) the cab is a tc 4x10 (500 watt) but i need a bit more than the 4x10 can give me,....so, how if i get a 2x12 tc cab add on (8ohms) will that be safe to use ? im struggling to find a 2x12 4 ohms cab which surely is a ideal match ?

Agree, Tom. Since you might normally expect a guy to run either a single 410 or 2 210s, you'd expect either combination to set up to a 4-ohm total load.

Sorry my brother but I disagree. Running a 4x10 and a 2x10 at the same impedance is a waste of time and effort. The 2x10 will limit the 4x10 to around the same volume as the 4x10 could achieve on its own maybe even a bit less.

Edit: As our friend CL posted, to make a viable 6x10, the 2x10 component NEEDS to be TWICE the impedance of the 4x10. This way each driver in either cabinet is getting the same amount of power. This creates an even power balance through out the system.

Note that running two different cabs with different model drivers and tunings is just as likely to give phase response problems as mixing driver sizes. Funny that no one picks on that when the driver diameters are the same.
