A $500 Cat Scratching Post

My cat is treating my new (to me) Epifani UL112 cab as a very expensive scratching post. He seems to have a real thing for the carpet covering because he goes into these insane scratch-frenzies which I've never seen him do before.

Normally I'm very tolerant of my darling Pierrot. He can jump on my bed with muddy paws and I won't say a word. But this is just not on! I keep trimming off the carpet fluff and he keeps tearing it up again!

The only thing I can think of is to wrap the entire cab in double-sided tape. I've read that cats don't like the feeling of this on their paws. Any cat owners got other suggestions?

Piss on the cab. Dogs and cats hate the smell of urine. Piss on your cab and I guarantee you won't have any cat troubles.

I cover my cabinets with old blankets. My GK 4-10 was also a 500 dollar scratching post.

Get a cheap canvas dust-cover made for it, or just drape a tablecloth or sarong around it.

Declaw the cat.

Since a cats' claws are in fact their fingers, declawing a cat comparable to amputating your fingers to the second knuckle.

I keep my carpet covered cabs stacked above my tolex cabs. My cat doesn't seem motivated to climb to get to them. The back of my couch however.....

Ideally, I'd like to stop the little bugger from scratching it in the first place. I think I'm going to have to resort to the water spray technique...

Why don't you put the cab in a room where the cat can't get to it, or, try this one, put in a room and close the door...

Do NOT declaw the cat. How would you like it if someone amputated all your fingers at the first knuckle? That would be the equivalent in human terms. Declawing is a cruel, painful, ignorant form of mutilation...

I'm going through the same thing with my Nemesis 4x10 combo amp, brother. And I own two of the furry little rascals...

My advice: Get yourself a cover - fast. And keep it on your cab at all times you're not actually playing through it...

There are sprays you can get at any pet store that are stainless and (to humans) odorless that you can spray on furniture, or in this case your cabinet, that will cause cats to avoid it or at least avoid digging their claws into it.

I've used just such a spray in the past and it worked like a charm on my cat. (Yes, speaker cabinets were some of the items I sprayed.) You do however have to give your cat a "real" scratching post as an alternative or the will just go back to their old habits when the spray wears off.

I have the same problem with a G-K combo practice amp and our two felines. Can't really blame them much as it is a tilt back job and looks just like the real cat scratching post we encouraged them to use years ago.

I think the real problem is not the cats but the crappy carpet covering on the amp. Next one will have tolex or some other form of smooth plastic covering and not fur. I am just living with it for now, but then I've got a cheapo G-K combo - good luck!

My #1 requirement for a cab is no carpet! I would love to check out a Berg or Epi cab but they only have carpet covering or tolex, which I don't like either.
My current 212 has Duratex which is an awsome covering. My cats see their reflections in my black bass drum head and paw it now.

Put the cabinet and the cat in the shower together. Your cat will associate the cabinet with water... okay, maybe that wouldn't work out so well.

I declawed my cat And contrary to popular belief, he still loves me as much as ever, but now, so do my cabinets and furniture.
Oh, I also neutered him. What a butcher, huh?

I use moving blankets to cover them with.
I steal them from my work; anyone in the Portland area can stop by have as many as they need/want.

I kinda like the way the cab looks with the pretty Epifani logo, so I'm loathe to cover it. I also like being able to use it whenever I want to without having to remove a cover.

As for putting the cab in a closed room, I keep it in my bedroom (it's a shared house) and I like sleeping with my cat. In fact, most mornings he wakes me up with the horrible sound of Epifani-mutilation.

First thing tomorrow...a water spray bottle!

Hiding and spraying the cat with a jet of water from a water pistol when he claws the cab has the same effect - the cat will learn to associate water with the cab and leave it alone.

And by using a water pistol instead of a shower there's much less chance of ruining your cab
