Hi guys and gals! I am brand-new to the bass, having just bought a Squier Classic Vibe ‘70’s Jazz bass, and I love it. I’ve played guitar for 30+ years and play lead in a local hard rock/metal/grunge cover band, and decided to take the dive into the deep end (sorry, I couldn’t help it). Despite playing guitar, I want to get into fingerstyle bass though, and eventually slapping. I got a steal on a Peavey Max 300, trying to get something with a decent tone and that would hopefully be loud enough to gig with in most places around here (Virginia Beach). I just have a few newb questions:
String size…I play 9’s on guitar, and have always preferred lighter strings, probably because that’s what I just started out on and got used to right off the bat. I only go higher than 9’s on short-scale guitars like Les Pauls, where I use 10’s. So taking all that into account, what would probably be the best bass string size for me?
And assuming my bass came with a “standard” set on it, what gauge are they?
Should I look into roundwounds?
