I really like the understated pickguard. It's just enough to break up the huge slab-o-wood look. Very cool

Nice wood grain and with subtle touch of relic. P's and J's must have covers, I put covers over all of my bridges and pickups so I am on board with that look for sure.
Well, the neck is a genuine fender, so the logo is on there for good

I used the covers in much the same way that you used the pickguard ...to break up the "plain slab of wood" look. I love plain slabs, but it wasn't what I wanted for this bass.

I got the body well before the neck for that bass, and went ahead and stained it - The aim was to make it darker than it turned out, so the body and neck would contrast. I was kind of dissapointed - the body didn't come out very dark, but when the neck came it (it's roasted maple), it was a really good match - from some angles, you can't tell where the neck begins and the body ends. A happy accident; I decided to go with it.
It's rare that there's a natural light wood tone that I DO like... But I like this bass.
Me too. Like it or not, this is what you are really getting whatever you buy.
You did very well, Dark Horse. It looks more like a bass that has had years of play instead of something that has been overly reliced. If i were to change or add anything, I would definitely added a ding to one of the ashtrays and perhaps put them on with a couple of rusty screws. BUT....as it stands now it is great! This is art.
That is sweet. Those Highway One P necks are outstanding...my favorite all time.
All the parts are accounted for. I don't see anything missing. I haven't read all 4 pages of this thread, but I'm assuming you've played it and you're happy with the tone. It's not too expensive, so you shouldn't have a problem bringing it with you to a bar/club where patrons have been drinking.

Without the covers, it would look very similar to the P-Bass John Wetton played in King Crimson, (- minus the tortoise shell pickguard.)
And I'm not normally big on relic-ed instruments, but this one really speaks to me.
you could try varnishNah. I'm sure that'd look great , but I have it looking exactly like I want it.
I'm very familiar with the properties of shellac, French polishing, etc... though typically use it as a sealer before shooting nitro. I didn't want to do that this time, I only wanted the shellac. It's been allowed to harden, been buffed,deglossed, and aged . It's also a finish that's easy to repair, though I'd only do that to this bass if I were planning on doing a nitro finish Later on.

I caught a video of Norman Watt-Roy playing a P/J with The Blockheads only last week on TV. It was a 3TSB Precision body and had an almost identical metal control plate, no pickguard, no exposed routing and no red in the burst where the pickguard would have been. Must have been from about '77/8 ish - I thought the bass looked very cool indeed, as does yours.
I caught a video of Norman Watt-Roy playing a P/J with The Blockheads only last week on TV.
