A Cab that does it all?

Hurlatron, you have some great supporters here. It's amazing how some cabs sound better with one more than another and then to put that right combination together.

However I do find the 750 to do a fine job a lower volumes, but I hardly ever do .... ah hmmm.

I did a little more ABCing last night. Broke out the NV215, BMS, and EW. Lined them all up using the TFB550 and DB750.

I'm starting to really get a hold on the DB750 even though it's EQ challenged to a point. My formula is pretty much the same with all three cabs setups pretty much keeping the Bright Switch engaged and Treble at 1:00, Mid 1:00, Bass 11-12:00 depending. All other EQ is done on my Sadowskys. The EW has a little less Treble and does well without the Bright switch on or off. The Bergs, especially the NV sounds the best with the Bright Switch engaged, as well as the BMS. I add a little more Bass from my instrument on the BMS.

With the TF, the EW and the BMS sound the best. The NV also sounds great but seems a bit strained. The BMS is the most versitale out of the bunch though, sounding superb with either amp. I ended up my trial with the 750 atop the NV215 and the TF on the BMS and pretty well matched them. I was amazed and went off to eat my dinner with a big smile.

I understand that the 750 through a Schroeder 1212 is absolutely amazing... I believe that is Jorg's personal rig. Knowing what the 1212 puts out with smaller SS amps, I bet that is just an amazing combination... small, punchy and loud.

PS While the NV610 was not my personal thing, I was very impressed with the Berg 2x15 plus mid... big bottom, but still enough definition... I still can't get over how much volume came out of that little 6" mid driver.... very nice.. if I were a rock and roller with a tube amp (or the Ag750), that would definitely be a killer cab!

Your requirements sound really simmilar to mine, and I'm very much on the same type of quest. While I don't neccesarliy feel like its the end-all-be-all, the best "all around" cab I've used so far is the GS410. Eden 115+210 XLTs are better for thick rock tones .... but the GS410 is a very balanced and well behaved cab with warm and smooth highs.

For ME, the bergantinos (HT115 and especially HT310) are a little too bright, not as plump as I like. Jims cabs seems to be geared toward producing lots of clarity in the upper end of the spectrum, which isn't always my thing, though I can see why some people swear by them. I want some juicy highs when I need them (slapping, picking, or playing hard finger funk), but want them to drop into the background a bit when I dont ... so I can get my round/fat fingerstyle on.

Anyway, if you can, try before you buy since we all have different ears and hands, and be sure to check out the 10" equipped aggies.

But if the Aggie GS410 is your favorite cab, then maybe just stick with that?

As funny as it is, I'm in a similar situation to pickles and the hurlatron.

I'm using two gs210's with my aguilar db750. It sounds good, but I feel like I could do better. The gs210's are heavy cabinets, and I feel like I could use more true bass, and less of the mid oriented sound the 210's put out.

To be honest though, I'm happy enough with cabinets as it is, and I have other GAS on my plate. So I'll have to wait for another day to deal with this.

3000 watts, 4x10 + 2x12 + 2x15 + 2xTweeter. Oh and no US distribution. Oh well .

Yes, I did turn down the tweeter, it was actually the sound of the upper range of the 10's that made the 310 too bright for me (with my bass, my amp, my band ... yadda yadda). The too-bright comment really just applies to the 310 actually, the 115 has a very balanced sound with the tweet about 1/4 of the way up. Like I said, I can really see someone being gaga over the 310 for exactly the reason I don't like it. Definition central! It sounds great with the demeter pre and my higher end basses ... but thats not what I'm going for at the moment.

I would very much like to try an NV, but I [/i]do[/i] like some tweetery bite when I slap.

But if the Aggie GS410 is your favorite cab, then maybe just stick with that?

Yup, I've come back full circle back to the GS. I started this crazy quest wanting a little extra "girth", but I think I found that adding or changing cabs wasn't really the right way to get that I'll know for sure after my next gig.

Only downside to the GS410 is that it weighs 100lbs. In terms of tone its one tasty box.

That sounds about right. This may be somewhat unexpected, but the HT310 is one of Jim's most "high end clear" cabs, IMHO.
