A Little Roscoe Fun

And I think the OBP-1 is partially responsible for the brightness. That preamp is really a beautiful, beautiful thing - it lets the pickups speak as the would passively, but it adds a little sparkle & extends the top end.

Jeff Moote's 4-string like this sings incredibly well, it just a very, very musical tone. Once I heard that bass a few months back, I knew I had to get some OBP-1 in my life. It's in my Lull M5V now, and I love it.

For anyone interested in the tone with the P & the J blended equally, here ya go! The chords are still just the bridge pickup, but the bassline is both pickups wide open.

"I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" (Billy Taylor, PJ on the bassline).

Really nice. Still has a very 'Roscoe tone', but bit more open than the Bart electronics. The treble is actually shifted down a bit which seems to add more clarity. That is one of the things about the Bart thing (preamp and pickups). Tons of upper treble, but the upper mids are very relaxed, which sometimes results in that upper treble to disappear in a mix. Just like with low end, where adding upper bass is usually more effective in getting a 'bigger low end' in a mix than adding deep bass, adding upper midrange/lower treble will actually (IMO) allow the top end of a bass to speak clearly in a mix and sound 'bright and open' versus adding upper treble. My guess is, the driver of this tone is more due to the pickups than the preamp, given my experience with the OB-3, but it is probably all working together. Nice!

I dig it. Nice playing:bassist:

The OBP-1 has a lower treble point (4 kHz) than the OBP-3 (6.5 kHz), so that lines up with what you're saying.

I forget exactly how I had the treble and bass boosts set for the various parts, but I'm pretty sure I had a little bit of both in the lead and melody parts...

Ah, +1 I dig the OBP-1... kind of similar to the Sadowsky. Not much of a fan of the OBP-3 myself. I assumed it was the OBP-3. Thanks for the clarification. Nice!

Here's a Roscoe that came and went today! Congrats to Steve here in Blacksburg. This is a killer bass!

Very tasty playing! And the bass sounds scrumptious - I really like the sound with both pickups full on.

Speaking of Gary Burton, he's teaching a free online jazz improv class on Cousera that starts July19. I'm sure it won't be as in-depth as the paid version, and I wouldn't expect much personal attention, but hey- it's free! I'm gonna give it a try.

I just took that class about a month ago, and it was wonderful. The "homework" kicked my butt (just a time crunch every week for 5 weeks), but it was very helpful. I look at charts quite differently now that I did before (and now I understand them so much better).
