A local TB'er ripped me off!!

Damn I was so hot for that bass before Christmas! I was this close to pulling the trigger but I had a financial hiccup and couldn't do it. The funny thing is if the thing played well I probably wouldn't have even checked the truss rod. I'm thinking that I need to do some research before I buy a used bass.

This ripoff is terrible news.

But I've always been baffled by the belief that someone who creates a free account on TB suddenly becomes inherently more honest than the rest of the planet.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that. However, someone with a long history on TB and long list of successful transactions on TB is safer than a complete stranger. ;)

Marking it sold is generally what happens here, and I'm thinking that if it were me, I'd have no real reason to delete it unless I wanted to hide something. But that's me...
The odd pattern of his deleted sale threads indicate that maybe he deletes those that he completes outside of Talkbass.

Another member messaged me and said that it appeared the seller deleted or had his account deleted around 12 am this morning.
His account isn't deleted.

You do not need a moderator to delete your ads. However, you should not delete ads in which a transaction was completed. I've undeleted it:
SOLD - 2003 Lakland, Skyline Darryl Jones 4
This transaction was completed outside of Talkbass, does that make a difference?

So I guess that you should not take delivery locally unless you really inspect the item, not just a cursory exam. If you detect an issue, stop. Don't tear the bass apart and don't post that you've torn the bass apart. If you go to small claims court, the seller can just say that the buyer had opportunity to exam the item prior to purchasing, took it home and then broke the bass and is how try now to blame the seller. Here are the threads where he says that he took everything apart and where he did he broke it. Your honor, I deleted the account because I felt he was trying to rip me off. And then it depends on the judge and the mood he/she is in that day.

So I bought this Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones from a TB'er, and I took delivery in person. Seemed great, but when I got it home, I discovered that the truss rod was broken. Unbelievable. He seems to have closed his account. :(

First and foremost Im sorry this has happened. When I sell a bass guitar I clean it play it make any adjustments then deliver it locally or ship it out. I inspected this one everything looked ok. So as normal I turn the truss rod to test it. I used an allen wrench for this adjustment which I did give to the buyer. I tightened it with ¼ inch x 2 it buzzed so I then loosened it a few small turns. I found no problems, I found nothing broken. I cleaned the bass guitar a little more then left to locally deliver it.

I met the buyer opened up the case handed him the bass, he said it looks good. I made it back home.I text him because Reverb.com said he had to mark the item as being received. At 3:15pm he text me to say thank you for refunding the shipping cost which I did. Also in that text he said he had been setting the string height and intonation and that he was ”very happy with the bass and thanked me”. Later he said the truss rod was frozen. He said he called Lakland but no worries everything is fine. I recommended 3 guitar shops that would inspect it for free. Later he calls saying the truss rod and nut are broken. I think the buyer should have stopped when he thought it was frozen. Youtube has videos on truss rod adjustments, they always say take it to a music store for this unless you are very experienced. I was not there when he worked on it. All I know is it worked when I gave it to him.
I contacted the guy I bought it from off ebayhere is his reply:

Dear mkave09,

I know the bass you bought from me. I honestly have no knowledge of a problem with the truss rod. But I never needed to use it as I found the adjustment to my liking. To the best of my knowledge there was not an issue with the truss rod.

Sincerely

Dear Sir
I bought a bass from you here on ebay in July. Lakland DJ 4 White. I didn't use it and put it up for sale. Today I sold it and the buyer says the truss rod is broke and was repaired before, I think he said the nut broke off. Do you have any knowledge of this nut or truss rod being broken or repaired. I told him I turned the nut here before I delivered it to him it adjusted fine? This has no bearing on my purchase from you. Its between this buyer and me. I would appreciate your help please.
Mike

Sorry to hear that. I have had one transaction on here and it went very well. I bought a Godin Shifter bass of a guy who was more than helpful etc. Hope it turns out alright when all is said and done.

You keep saying this. The fact that this was picked up locally DOES NOT MEAN IT WAS HANDLED OUTSIDE OF TB.

Well, it was a deal between TB members......outside of the TB classifieds. However one wants to classify it is on them.

It was not outside of the classifieds simply because it was local pickup.
Forum is screwing with my quotes! I thought the OP said he did the deal through Reverb? So technically NOT a TB classifieds deal. But does it really matter. What can the mods do?
