So my wife bought me one of those long instrument stands that holds up to 7 basses for Christmas. The only problem is, I only have three basses. Do you think this is her way of telling me I need to go buy 4 more basses? I think so.
Well I'm sure the extra slots aren't there to hold a couple of brooms, a mop and an umbrella. I'd say fill it up with what it's meant to be filled with! Time to go bass shopping
Oh my, I would consider the answers to two questions first: 1) Are your basses usually all over the place - if so, she's not giving you license to buy more basses, she's telling you to put yer $#it away. 2) Are your basses in one place, specifically a place she has designs on placing say a credenza? - if so she's telling you to get yer $#it out of her way. By no means is the previous list of questions exhaustive, those are just the two reasons my wife has suggested I need a multi-stand, in chronological order no less...
I can assure you that you will have a more definitive answer as soon as you go out and buy a couple more. The other distinct possibility is that your wife also bought you 4 more basses to fill the rack, and she just plans to keep it a secret until Christmas. You should plan to be a model husband for the next 8 days so you don't screw it up!
Yes, buy more! If you bought her a new shoe rack that held 50 pairs and she only had 20, don't you think she'd fill that with no hesitation?
Methinks you should be able, provided you remain in 'good hubby' status, to parlay this into four gifted basses from the wife. Bring her into the process... discuss color coordinating your new axes so they look good in a row, that kind of thing. Let me be the first to (prematurely) congratulate you on the seven-bass collection!
naw .. I find on the 7 space cases that I like to only put 4 in, and leave a space between each ... ... so that means you only get to find ONE more ... and that she cares about keeping your basses nice so they dont hit against each other in the rack ... ... Merry Christmas ... what did you get her?
Actually, this year we had our 4th and likely last child, so I thought it would be cool to get her a mother's ring- which if you aren't familiar, is a ring with the birthstones of each child in it.
I think it shows she expects you to buy more and the stand is her way of making peace with that. Wouldn't fill it up as quickly as possible, but no shame in picking them up when the right opportunities present themselves.
.. outstanding choice ... and congratulations! ... ... very familiar with them, in fact I have been comtemplating getting Gramma (my wife) a Grandmothers ring, but just waiting to see if the kids are done making her more grandbabies ...
I think the clear message is....you have an awesome wife! Congratulations!! (Mine bought me a Tacoma CB10E4 for my birthday many years ago so I should know.)
I do indeed have an awesome wife- better than I deserve, in fact! I think scourgeofgod is probably right about her intentions. So what do I need to add next? I have a 74 precision that I wont likely ever part with, a Fender Cabronita Precision, and a MIM Active Jazz with a P neck.
Fender guy mainly? How about a fretless Precision? Don't see those every day. Bonus - you can channel your inner Sting:
The four extra spaces are their so you can buy each child a bass and get them learning as soon as possible. Obviously, if your kids are still too young, you still need to purchase the instruments now so you can get to know them and therefor teach better!
I'm not a Fender guy based on brand recognition. I've owned a fair amount of basses and for years my main player was an American Peavey Cirrus, I loved it but after a while, it stopped doing it for me. I have also owned a Peavey Millennium BXP5 which was a solid bass. The rest of the non fenders I've owned were garbage. I've owned some garbage Fenders too though! I was actually thinking something from Warwick's Rock Bass line might be fun to play around with. Oh, and get this- my wife wants me to teach her to play a little, but she wants a short scale, so I guess I have a reason to buy one of those! This would also work for my kids! Anybody have any thoughts on the Rock Bass offerings, or a good short scale or even sub short scale?
