A rare find at Guitar Center

There's plenty of threads that boutique bashing would be more appropriate (although technically against the forum rules) it would at least fit more appropriately.

I myself am not very into the boutique basses, but I can reserve my opinions, in respect that they have not been requested of me.
I can appreciate the OP's feelings of excitement having just scored a great bass.
I can appreciate the standard of quality the bass is definitely made to meet.
And more importantly I can appreciate the interesting story of how the OP has since found out who the original builder was, and spoken to him, as well as the musician who the bass was built for.

But, all of that's a waste, haters are gonna hate, children will be children.

Why would somebody bother to post their opinions of others? You are the pot calling the kettle black.

This is talkbass where people talk about basses, inevitably sharing their opinion. The fact somebody doesn't like how the top wood looks is their opinion, they are entitled to it, and I look forward to them sharing it. I personally don't care for it either. If you don't want others to post their thoughts about it, don't post about it anywhere on the internet, simple as that. I didn't see any hate in the thread I assume OP is getting it elsewhere. Somebody not liking the look of the bass or wondering if it may be potentially stolen is not hate. Especially consider GC's track record with used instruments.

Back to the topic, very nice bass, and an interesting story to follow as well. (Some other killer deals also in this thread that I wish I found)

It's like this. I bought a bass or guitar and you didn't. It's made for my hands and ears. If ya don't have anything nice to say, there are plenty of other like minded individuals elsewhere. One man's trash is another man's wife.

Thank you!! That's what this is all about. An unusual find at Guitar Center. Imagine finding an icons' instrument on sale anywhere. I bought it because it plays like butter..that's it. The history makes it more interesting, but if it wasn't Randy Coven's I would have left with it anyway.

In the early nineties I had a girlfriend who I really liked. I stayed with her for six years! She brought me a tape of a guy who she said played bass with Yngvie Malmsteem and Steve Vai, and we would listen to it in the car. Some guy she had dated gave it to her, and she didn't know who the guy on the tape was. It was pretty cool music, and we listened to it a lot.

One day, my car got stolen, and when we got it back, it turned out the idiot kids who stole it had run out of gas, and when they put gas in it, they put the gas can in the back seat, and it turned on its side, and poured gasoline into my carpet, and some tapes they had thrown there got melted by it. Her tape was one of them, and she was very unhappy, because she loved that tape, and it was irreplaceable, since she didn't know who it was.

All these years later, I am POSITIVE that it was (wait for it...)

RANDY COVEN!!!!

So thanks to your find at GC, I just sent her a message on facebook with links to a bunch of Randy's songs, so she can decide for herself.

Even though I'm not crazy about all gold hardware I think it works well on this bass.

On the hater tip my guess is that's probably how they were brought up.
The need to crap on someone else's good fortune is just plain sad IMO. At a minimum its trying to provoke a reaction. Knowing that, my typical reaction is "thanks".

Great looking bass!

I see some really cool used stuff at my local GC sometimes...most of the time the prices equal what similar basses go for here on TB...sometimes they are higher/lower at GC.

Still though, once in awhile they get some real unusual stuff that have potential to be a super rare find...

I don't recall specifying any opinion about anyone or any group of people, I questioned why people would feel the need to share their distaste for basses of this appearance, when it wasn't solicited.

None the less my kettle is stainless steal, why do you just assume all kettles & pots are black?

What are you trying to say?

My pots are however black Teflon then I also have my cast iron stuff, but that's more of a really dark brown.

I have a very diverse group of cookware. I really don't appreciate your single mindedness. Lets try and keep in mind that cookware has feelings too.



As far as your butt-backwards way of thinking about how if people don't want to have others share their opinions don't post it online is ridiculous.

How about keep your rude & disrespectful comments/opinions to yourselves unless someone asks to hear it. Not only is it being decent and respectful of others tastes, I'm pretty sure it's TB policy.

Members should be able to share their instruments here regardless of whether people like it or not, and not just be EXPECTED to deal with the negative remarks about its aesthetics all because its the Internet. According to your way of thinking everyone should just post their stuff only on the condition that its the Internet and they should expect good comments as well as nasty comments. That's just not the case here.
This would be why TB has rules against it.
Otherwise it's just a free for all for people to just insult those who play instruments that aren't overly popular etc.

And for those who "appreciate" differing opinions, there's plenty of much less personal threads, that are much more directed towards basses like this in general, where you can go read all kinds of bashing. (if that's your thing)
Those threads don't directly and individually impact one member or his/her bass.

Either way, something tells me the OP is more than happy with his bass, and most likely has skin thick enough to deal with the impolite society has yet to mature or refine.

My apologies, it wasn't my intention to stir the pot-or the kettle for that matter.

Diablo, no beef with you particularly, just really hate to see someone show up excited only to end up finding himself having to defend his new toy instead of enjoying it or discussing the positive points about it.

Really Diablo made his point I made mine, it's obvious we see it differently and that in itself is okay.

Who exactly is he? Just how accomplished did he become in his prime? Or is he still in it?

I saw a link or two earlier in the thread and the guy appears to be pretty decent, has he done anything really notable? Anything popular?

Even if he's just a mildly known or fairly well known act, that's cool to now own his bass, and to have the builders handwriting identifying it all.
I'm sure with enough digging you may be able to find pics or video with him using it.

Actually, the builder stated Randy never used this particular instrument on tour. He was concerned it would get damaged.
