A Trombone question

I know, any time we use more than 5 sharps or 5 flats, we have to look at the ivory.
Its a circle of fifths and fourths, the circle favors keys that are flat in name.

The question was "how long to play HS Jazz charts", and you said "10-12 years." Starting in 5th grade, that would make you ready for HS Jazz charts sometime in college, which seemed a bit off to me, as someone who also started in 5th grade and was playing HS Jazz all four years of HS, albeit I could have been a lot better that first year, but they were in enough need of bodies that they took me anyway and made do. We took the state title a couple of times, so perhaps we were not all that terrible.

When I went to school there were only three years of High School and three years of Junior High School. Such was the 1960's. We had no organized jazz band but we did have a Marching Band, a Concert Band and an Orchestra. There was no school sanctioned jazz band until I went to college. I tried out for college jazz band (reading jazz charts - I taught myself) on trombone. There was more need for a upright bass player so I taught myself how to play one over a couple of weeks. I played bass guitar since Jr. High School so it wasn't hard to pick up. You can take and interpret that any way you want. I taught myself how to read jazz chords and play from fake books out of necessity if I wanted to be in the College Jazz band. I didn't read charts in high school because it wasn't necessary.

things are different now. Music in schools is after thought, locally most middle schools are loosing school sports.
Because I played bass in middle school, I used a school instrument. The violins the trumpets the oboes had to buy their own. The trombone players used school instruments, but had to supply their own lawyers

My oldest son was the exception. The school provided drums, Tuba's and Baritones. Everything else was student provided. My youngest son played trombone like I did. I played bass guitar and guitar in a couple of bands outside of school. My oldest son played his drum kit in a rock band outside of school.

just agreed to lend out a bass to a kid who sings in a church choir, with the understanding that he can use the bass in any band his older sister ok's. Trying to plant a seed. Why is a long story.

To be really good at brass there needs to be some existing facial/jaw /teeth structure that is good for it. With bad bones (ha ha pun intended) of the face and bad teeth etc. it probably will be extremely difficult to become good. Just like someone with short stubby fingers might find it more difficult to play guitar the way Steve Vai plays.

This is why a lot of drummers look like cavemen.
