Acme Users Unite!!!

Hi guys. One of the woofers in my series 1 Acme B-2 is finally going out after 22 years! Amazing. Would you all recommend I buy from Acme (Andy was pretty surly with me on the phone...) or get Legend BP102-4s from Eminence (replacing both!)? Thank you!

My understanding has been that those cabs use special proprietary high excursion woofers, so I’ve always bought from the source (even though that “core charge” is a bummer).
I’d be open to a different source for woofers, but not if it compromises that addictive low end these cabs are so good at.

I'm going to try the separate pre and power amp setup. Right now I only have one 8 ohm Low B-2 but I'll likely add a second in the future. Any recommendations for a good value power amp that could power the one for now but also be more than sufficient for powering a second cab in the future? I'd prefer something relatively light, and that doesn't have too much fan noise.

I haven't looked at or shopped for power amps in decades, but back when I had Acme cabinets and a preamp/power amp setup, I used a QSC PLX2402. It never let me down. I engaged the low pass filter to protect the woofers a bit.

Is "used" a brand? A best-buy would be something like a Crown XLS 1500 or higher...I run a stack of 'em in the PA and have used both the 1500 and 2500 with (2) Acme B2's. My rack now has a PLX 1602 which came from lord-knows-where. You can run one enclosure per side or daisy-chain (creates a 4 ohm load) and run the power amp in bridged mono.

I don't think the Stewart guys are around anymore, but their amp did right by me and my Acme's...
