My current ACME rig: (series II and III stacked)

So... I'm using an ACME B1 sitting on top of a non-acme 210. I think the relative efficiency of these two cabs is part of why they work well together. The B1 needs more juice to reach the same SPL as the 210, and because the other cab is a 210, the B1 gets the extra power it needs so they do seem to work well as a pair (the b1 and non acme 210). If I wanted this to be an all ACME rig, my question is this: Will an 8ohm b2 work with my 8ohm b1 or should I just buy a second b1? My worry is the B1+B1 wont be loud enough for some gigs and the B1+B2 would be limited by the B1's capacity since that cab would get the same amount of juice as a B2 along side (and unlike my current setup, the two cabs would have similar power needs and therefor be unbalanced together.) I guess what I am asking the Acme experts is whether two B1s are better than a B2 or whether a combination of B1+B2 would work. Should I just sell the B1 and get a pair of B2s? (playing 70s/80s rock with a 4 string jazz bass / aguilar tone hammer 500 for now). Thanks!

Not that I'm biased or anything but I would sell the B1 and purchase a pair of B2s. All four of mine are 4Ω. I chose that because I was going to use a stereo power amp that could run into 2Ω per channel. Today I'm happy enough with that choice as all of my amplifiers can run all four at the same time. I gig, however, with just a pair.

I contacted Andy Lewis through facebook . . . he says they haven't used those metal edge protectors since like 1999! didn't know my "new" cab was so old.
Perhaps I will strip the carpet off and refinish.

You can probably buy the things on-line by searching "cabinet building and repair"...speaker, that is. You may have to cut to length with a hacksaw but that's a whole lot easier than attempting to refurb the entire cabinet.

how many watts do you think would be necessary to power my acme b2? I would like to ditch my pre/power amp setup for a regular bass amp (preferably micro head) or a combo with extension cab ability.
I really can't judge how many watts I'm pumping into it with my current power amp . . . the signal coming out of my pre (zoom b3) is pretty weak. I can turn everything all the way up and get a good solid gig level, not crazy loud. That's theoretically 800 watts going into the cab but I know the actual signal is nothing like that.

for reference I used to have a markbass lm2 into an 8 ohm 15" cab, that's 300 watts and it was enough, but that's probably a much more efficient cab. Also the drummer I'm playing with now is slightly louder.

one I was considering is the carvin micro series, possibly the 2x10 combo -- but it's only 250 watts at 4 ohms -- so my acme cab would only be getting 125 watts. what's the point of that?!

I have IEM's so I'm not too worried about hearing myself, but our PA has a single, kinda weak subwoofer, and I can't rely on that much. My rig will provide most of the volume and low end.

Because of the design goals of the Acme cabinets they don't tend to match up too well with non Acme products. I drive my gig pair with a Carvin HD2000. That's about 500W per cabinet but I'm nowhere near that at a gig. I also use a BX1500 as a backup. i have no interest in a micro amp per se but I'm fully behind the lightweight Class D amps. I would also never try to play a gig with just one B2.

er, ok. trust talkbass to give ya the hard truth you may or may not want to hear. Another b2 might be in my future, or buying the band a second identical subwoofer to the one we already have and leaning a bit more on the PA.

We tells it how we sees it!! :)

If you buy a second B2 and you leave the band, as will inevitably happen, The B2 goes with you. A second subwoofer may not.

For me part of my "sound" is what my Acme cabinets do with the signal I send them. Through the PA I sound like a generic version of Paul! :(

Both may be in order. As Paul mentioned, a second B2 is would fill out your backline presence nicely but you have to give the same degree of attention to what the PA is carrying. I line-out from my rackmount preamp to the mixer...it's essentially tweaking a second bass rig.
