Acme Users Unite!!!

Depends on the gig, Paul. A great many people use a single B-1 for what they're doing.

Andy

I'm sure they do just as others are happy with a single B2. I just feel that my equipment lasts longer and is more reliable if I don't push the stuff to it's limits. In my fifty odd years I've not damaged a driver except through my own stupidity: not allowing the cabs time to warm up from a sub zero temperature and clumsiness: sticking a screwdriver through one. I own four B2s so why risk blowing a cabinet by just using one. I figure that would amount to laziness. :) I have complete and utter confidence that a pair will do any venue I'm ever faced with. I'm a BASS player after all! :D

Hi there. I have one 4 Ohm B2 left (i used to have 2 of those, but these days i only play small jazz-ish rooms in NYC). Did a solo set 6 weeks ago with a GK MB200 - while deeply underpowered and a a bit slow, still very deep sounding, and loud enough for that particular listening space. My new TH500 finally came in this week, and makes quite a difference in terms of presence and reaction time. First gig test is up next week Tuesday. Best wishes

Yes I read all about the hate in these pages. Sometimes I think that if we don't have anything to complain about we'll find something be it carpet or fan noise. :hiding:

Off topic: I hope Colin is doing well.

Thanks, Paul.

Yeah, Collin is fine. Today was his 19th birthday, and we took the day off, and went to see the Colorado Rockies play the NY Mets. It was pretty cold, but the game was good, and our leading hitter, Dexter Fowler, fouled one off that came right to my son, so he got a souvenir!

I'm glad you'll be putting a little more juice on it. That little GK is, as you say, deeply underpowered for a speaker as inefficient as this one...

Thanks,
Andy

That sounds like a great time for all involved! :)

Hey Andy, welcome to TB!

I'm recording with my Flatwound next week in a cabin up in VT, so I'll try to post some pics of the setup! The single driver makes it a GREAT cab for mic'ing...I'll be using a Beta 52 and SM57 (for a little bite). Wish me luck!

:bassist:

So...I never posted this, but I did do it. Sorry for the massive delay, but I'm updating social media with pics from recording and thought I'd share.

The Flatwound recorded GREAT! I had 3 tracks running: Beta 52 toward the ring of the driver, SM 57 closer to the dust cap, and a DI line...sounded HUGE! Had to do a little phase alignment but really happy with the sound.

If anyone wants to hear it, you can stream at makoor.bandcamp.com, but it's also on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc. Enjoy!

Got a predicament, and I need to incur some opinions, remarks, and general banter here.

I have an Acme Low B2, Series-I, that's recently received some new drivers and an upgraded crossover form the patient-and-magnanimous Andy Lewis. He's a good cat to deal with, and sent very readable instructions for re-installing the new parts, which is great for a technical disaster like me... but I had success. So here's the predicament:

I have the single Low B2, @ 8 ohms. It's throws more bass than I've ever heard out of a small box, even when powered by just my Trace AH350SMX (again, at 8 ohms). Wow! 2 of these would be sweet. But, I have the opportunity to swap the single B2 for a Mesa Diesel 410 (8 ohms)- which is expedient as I'm pretty broke (tho' I have a thing or 2 to sell and could find another B2, I suppose).

The Mesa cab, however, solves a gear problem- I'll be done screwing around for now and can go play gigs. But the B2... just seems like a good idea, if I could find another and stack them, making a really gig-worthy rig. I can get a cheap power amp, again if I sell off stuff. I mean, the sound is really very 3-dimensional, and the lows are just cushy...

Any advice? I have a single 18 cab I can get away with for a while if I do pursue the acme route. I'll probably sell the 18 at some point, esp if I keep the acme thing going. Really, the thing is, I can't make up my mind- but I have gigs pending and can't screw around that much. I'm looking for an Acme B2 for sale locally, and I understand it doesn't matter which Series I find, they're all the same spec-wise.

Another consideration is the Mesa is probably great for the hard, nasty rock n roll thing I'm doing as a side project. But I also know that better sound is, well, better sound...

The Diesel 410 is a great cab. I have one, and it's one of my favorite 4x10's. However, it is an extremely heavy beast! Probably the heaviest 4x10 I have encountered. If portability is any concern at all, then Acme wins hands down. But I can appreciate the value of a no cash added trade.

Weight is an issue because of the rough stone steps I live on top of, which winter makes a hell on earth out of. I've posted about htis before. I thought of a ramp/dolly/pulley jig, but then I'd have to deal with a small rigging scene at 3 am in a hostile environment, and I've decided that that's just stupid. :)

Besides, I've just finished noodling with my TE AH350SMX into the Acme, and what a beautiful sound. I'm going to go find another 8 ohm Low B2... thanks for the reply, Tom. :bassist:

You've learned well, Grasshopper! Whatta ya think....about $300+/-?

Riis

Ha! Thank you Sifu! Hey, so yeah, I guess around $300 would make it happen, sure. Now, the one I have has the latest crossover, mid and tweeter, so I guess a Series-II at 8 ohms would be what I'm after. Why, you have one, perchance?...

Nope, two but they're not for sale. Paul has four IIRC. Why don't you go swipe one of his? He won't miss it for weeks and, when he does, he'll just think he misplaced it like he does his reading glasses.

I see them crop up occasionally here in the classifieds...keep your eyes peeled.
