AERO PICKUPS - Religious Tone Experience

This is Larry Pollack of Aero Instrument. I just wanted to thank Oz for inviting me, and everyone else for purchasing our products. I won't monitor or respond to questions on this thread, but if you'd like to discuss your application for pickups or dBuz, please contact me directly. I prefer telephone calls, 808-969-6774, and have phone hours from 9 AM to 2 PM Monday to Thursday, Hawai'i time, which is 6 hours behind EST. You can also email us at [email protected], though the answers will be shorter and less complete. Our Facebook and Instagram are monitored and answered by someone other than myself.

I did want to comment that the Aero dBuz is not a shock hazard. See our product description at d-buz.com. The parallel resistor/capacitor combination (220 K/1 nF), suggested in the shock.jpg, will limit a shock, but it won't eliminate noise. Confirm this for yourself by experiment. Solder, in parallel, a 220 K resistor and a 1 nF capacitor. Plug in your instrument and hold one end (of the parallel combination) in your hand, and ground the other end on the instrument. Ground noise will somewhat diminish, but not completely. Do not attempt this at power line voltages, only at ground potentials on the instrument.

Larry! Welcome to Talkbass and thanks for providing some info for the folks looking to pickup some Aero pickups or learn a little bit about the dBuz you're offering. I know there's another thread with some more information (and confusion) about the dBuz. Looking forward to learning more!

The pickup on this bass is a custom from Aero and it's definitely part of the reason that it's my #1.

I believe it is technically an Aero B4pd Type 1 Level 2 pickup. It uses jazz style bobbins but still gets a very Pbass like tone but with a wider response and added clarity. Great pickup and the East P-Retro preamp only adds to the versatility.

That is beautiful - what kind of bass is that?? Would love to hear some clips.

I think that's a big thing that gets missed is Aero mostly specializes in Custom made products not just drop in Fender replacements. Was surprised to see that they were even making Travis Bean replacements!

I have a Type 1 P set and another Type 1 Jazz set on the way for a couple aluminum neck projects - so stoked!

Thanks, it's a Stambaugh. I've got a couple tracks that I used it on but at some point I want to do a few videos/reviews of my basses. This one came alive when I put TI Jazz Flats on it.

I had a Lakland DJ4 that came with Aero Type 1 jazz pickups. The other three basses I've owned with Larry's pickups were all custom jobs. Each one was different (with different pickups - a set of three single coil P type pickups, dual coils and the soapbar P style) but the common theme with Aero pickups is the wide frequency response and clear, powerful tone.

I have a Lakland Skyline Custom 5 string with Delano Jazz large pole pups. This combination is the best
I've ever had.
Very interested in the comments of the Aero Type 1 jazz pups.
By chance is there any one who has done a comparison of these two makes, 4 or 5 string doesn't matter ?
Would appreciate any comments on tonal differences.

I think you'll love them!

Just had them installed this AM with fresh set of Roto 77s and a setup. Wow - these are super deep sounding - and dig the snazzy cover action.

They’re very quiet - no noise I can detect. But man do they Boom. Compared to the stock Fender pups they sound like they’re going through an Active preamp. There seems to be much more noticeable sub low end as well - like I’m finally feeling the fundamental out of this instrument.

One of the cats who works at bestbassgear.com has AB'd these, not sure who it was but I'd give them a ring they can give you some more info for sure.

I really dig those covers and glad to hear you're stoked on them! That's how I felt anytime I installed these in a bass with stock pups, it's like dropping a turbo charged engine into your vehicle. Awesome response

Why did I have to read this thread ?

Just when I thought I could live with my stock P pickup in my Mustang PJ Bass, Jason comes along and says good things about the Aero P pup hearing them with one of my two favorite flats... The 77's

Then there is the J pup I wasn't planning on using. Now I'm reading all this love about the Aero J's

I'm gonna die broke

Luckily these aren't too pricey but worth every dime! Snag a set and let us know how your PJ sounds!!

I'll give Larry a call after I check out a few videos and determine any questions I might want to ask.

I'll definitely let you know what I think if I grab a set.

He's a wealth of knowledge and very helpful, I wish there were more hifi demos available online right now but he's in the process of redoing his website and adding more content.

If your Sadowsky sounds good when played acoustically then it will sound incredible with a set of Aeros.
Hmm, I didn't pay much attention to my Mustang PJ as far as how it sounded acoustically with the stock strings. I have TI Flats on it now and being low tension, they are not very loud played fingerstyle unplugged. I can feel plenty of resonance in the body though as well as the neck.

I'm getting ready to try rotosound 77's on it after I run a couple of errands. I'm sure they are higher tension and will have more volume unplugged.

By sounding good acoustically, what exactly are the qualities to listen for ?

Volume ? Mids ? Sustain ? Etc.

I'm just not sure if I would know if an instrument sounds good unplugged if I heard it. Other than volume.

Hopefully @Larry Pollack will chime in here because he'll be able to elaborate a lot more eloquently than I ever could. In my experience if you're getting volume, sustain and resonance with no dead spots or excessive buzzing while playing acoustically then you'll be in good shape. Mind you I haven't had them in a bass and *not* had them sound fantastic, but I did hear about one member who had installed a set of Type 1's in a MIM fretless jazz bass that wasn't doing it for him and the Aeros were not a saving grace. I believe he tried a few other sets of high-end pickups with similar disappointing results and ended up just writing it off as a lost cause + parted the body out.

Fair enough. I think he mentioned he would not be answering questions on the thread but if he does comment, good deal. If not I'll give him a call.

Thanks for taking time to reply. I'll have a better idea how to describe what I'm hearing unplugged after I get the 77's on it.
