"Affordable" 24 Fret Basses?

Traben Neo-4-black.jpg

I picked up a used Traben Neo for $140 (Can) the other day. Haven't gigged with it yet.

Wow, that's funny. I actually learned to play on one of these. It's still sitting in my folks' garage, OHSC and all!
My first real bass was an SB700. It eventually got stolen, but I bought another a few years a go purely for nostalgia. They're great basses though, and can still be had for decent prices. Last I looked there was one in the B&S for ~$800.

Yeah, I was a little surprised by their resale prices! When I was a kid I figured it was just some junky import but they are actually pretty nice. Might have to break it out next time I visit the parents.

The Sire and the Schecter are nice, but they're not as comfortable as an Ibanez when you get to frets 22, 23, and 24.

Here's the SR400ecbw in grey burst ($499 new):

Pretty much all of the SRs are cut like this. Slimmer necks also help when you're up by the heel.
I particularly like the recessed output jack on those modern Ibbys.

So many great choices these days.

My Spector Legend 5 is 24 frets and was $400 used.

I'll second Spector. Bought my Q4 pro for $4oo used in excelent condition. Absolutely love it.

I absolutely adore Spector, really I do, but I hardly consider them to have easy 24-fret access. I can get to 21/22 comfortably, but after that it's the awkward stretch everybody hates. When I think of easy access I think of basses like Ken Smith where playing in last position is just as easy as playing in the middle of the neck.

That said, for under $500, I haven't a clue about any recommendations.

Keep an eye out for a Tobias Growler or Toby Pro from the 90's... (the MIK musicyo models) they're 24 fret, and a pretty good value at around 4-600 bucks.
