After reading TB for almost a year

we are a freaky bunch of string pluckers, are we not?

i can't imagine how much of my current knowledge came from years of loving it here. an important bit about reading too much tb is to make sure you find your own opinions with hands-on experience with the instruments, and even more importantly examine how things add up in a realistic live situation - not how they would sound in a beautifully appointed theatre, but how does it sound in the corner of a local restaurant or rock club or what have you.

i, for one, noticed that on those small stages i can barely hear the difference between alder and ash bodies.

don't worry, the occasions where i play nice places i can clearly hear the difference :smug:

I wanted to make my bass play better so I roasted a baseball bat in butter. I wanted it to sound better, so I put on a tortoise shell pick guard. I sold everything but my P bass and bought 4 more P basses so I could have one each with different kinds of flats and different tone woods on the fret boards. I routed chambers into all of them because some of them weighed more than 8 lbs 6 oz. Tone wood makes all the difference, but you don't want too much of it! I spent thousands on boutique cabinets and high-end heads and use DI live with IEMs. I obsess over minor tonal differences in pickups but still can't play two-octave arpeggios in 12 keys without losing my place half way through the circle of fifths.

And after all that I still can't figure out the best bass for metal. Can anybody help?
I'm pretty sure we settled that.
Do a search.

Say all you want about Talkbass, but I cured my GAS for buying basses here. NO NO! It's TRUE!

You see, I discovered the effects forum and now all my money goes to buying pedals. But I haven't even thought about buying a bass in the last 5 years. Thinking about checking the amps forum more frequently now!

Yeah, but did the pedals come with a box?
(ya know, basses come with bigger boxes!)

The best is when they accidentally intersect. One of the most ridiculous things I ever saw was that one poster felt the need to have a “DB” disclaimer in a thread title about pets, as if to put an exclamation point on how much the BG side is loathed and despised over there. Very stuffy crowd.

I will openly admit here that , every time I see a person struggling to travel with a DB, the foremost thought in my mind is ..............
"For $20,000 I could buy a nice DB, or a really nice BG.......and a car to haul it in".

Then I smile my secret smile........just to myself.

If, after a year on here, you're so obsessed with bass that you never go out of the house anymore (except to pick up a bass that UPS dropped off), they you're doing several good things:

1) By not driving, you've reduced your carbon footprint.
2) You're avoiding a lot of hazards that exist out in the real world, like banana peels that you could slip on and break something. And, of course, skin damage from the sun.
3) You're helping support the guy who delivers your pizzas.
4) Seeing you in that condition, you're probably also motivating the pizza delivery guy to finish school and get a real job so he doesn't end up like you.

I could go on, but you get the point. Good work!

Hi,

What I find totally amazing is this; In our society everything from cigarettes and alcohol to power tools and paint are covered in warning labels alerting us to the dangers, the addiction, the birth defects, the bodily harm, and the negative mental effects these items have on the population.

And yet, bass players are allowed to walk around with no restrictions.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Don't forget anal leakage.

Ok ok, I've been schooled on a couple things I missed in my year of study here. I told you, I'm a slow learner! But y'all got my back.
  1. Fire the drummer (duh)
  2. The only cure for GAS is… there is no cure for GAS
  3. DO A SEARCH
  4. Something something carrots

Sorry, but you haven't expressed outrage or otherwise been BH by any posts, so you'll need to work on it for another year...
