Aguilar GS410 not quite what I expected??

you should have tried the DB 410 instead, they have much more booty than the GS cabs. in my opinion.

That is the exact opposite of how I hear those cabs.

If you want more fat, but still the aggie sound, get GS 12s. The GS 10s are tight, dry, and punchy. The 12s have a softer, rounder sound with more bottom. If a GS412 will fit in your car, you owe it to yourself to try one. They rule.

100% agree with all of this :) love my GS410 but the GS412 is the KING!

So I've fortunately been able to log about 16 hours over the last couple days playing the cab and comparing it to the AE410. First, I really think the guys up here that said the cab may need to loosen are correct. It does sound a bit more low mid punchy now, though still not as much as the AE410 at the same tone settings, which is pretty much flat with both switches on. To get a punchier and bigger low end I turn the bass up to about 2 oclock with the GS. This yields a not quite as punchy as the AE but definitely a bigger tone that stays big further out than the AE. As far as the mids and highs I'd say its pretty much impossible to match the AE and vice versa. The AE is just not quite as in your face as the GS. The GS is all about upper mids to my ear (how I hear the AG500 compared to the DB750, more on this later) while the AE is more about punchy lows.

After experimenting I find the GS a lot easier to hear myself, especially when soloing over a band, compared to the AE. Those GS upper mids and highs really help me relax my right hand rather than trying to force loud notes to hear myself. On the other hand the GS can't match the more juicy bottom end of the AE even with the bass at 2 oclock. Again, the GS with bass at 2 sounds bigger but not low mid punchy like the AE even with the bass set flat. The GS punch seems to come more from the upper mids which gives a somewhat dry sound but very cutting.

So after tweaking the tone settings on my DB750 to both switches on, treble between 12 and 1, mids flat, bass at 2, and the cab tweeter at noon I have a pretty good tone. It sounds more articulate than what I'm used to out of the DB750, which I think was a part of what was scaring me at first. What is interesting is that I noticed the DB750/GS now sounded similiar to my AG500 into the Bergantino. Imagine the AG500 with a bit more of that tubey midrange and a touch more give to the tone and that's bassically the DB750 into the GS410. I admit this sounds a bit dry while practicing solo but seems to sit nice in the mix. Funny thing is I've been bringing my AG500/AE410 to all the gigs lately because its dryness and upper mids/highs really sit well with the band.

I did hook up both the AG500/AE410 and DB750/GS410 and the two rigs sound pretty similar. The DB/GS has a bit more give, tubey mids, and bigger tone while the AG500/AE has a bit more punch. The upper mids and highs in both rigs are very articulate and very similar sounding.

I have gigs most every weekend so we'll see how the GS does over the next month. I'll be listening to hear if it has enough punch and if the high mids don't get annoying to my ear. I have it a feeling, like the AG500, this new rig will sit well in the mix. We'll see!

The difference between most 4x10 cabinets below 100hz is minimal. The amount of upper bass bump is different, the top end rolloff before the tweeter is different, but the amount of output below 100hz doesn't vary that much amongst the quality stuff.

What led you to expect a particular tone from the cab in the first place?

Asking for others' opinions of the tone may be what got you into this situation in the first place. You have to listen with your ears, and not assume anyone else's idea of "good tone" matches yours.

Would you close your eyes and trust me to put salt onto your food? No, because our tastes differ.

Excellent.... This is why I always say "Play before you pay" - - just because other folks like something doesn't mean you will.

The above is pretty much exactly opposite of my experience with both cabs having owned both. Trade AE for GS and vice versa in the above paragraphs and that's what I was going to post below. Oh well...

This thread is a fantastic argument for why accurate specs and FR plots would be good:P

:smug: Only if the plots were done driven by the extremely voiced Aguilar heads. I've never heard cabs sound SO different than driven by that DB750. That head is one that can make a few cabs sound absolutely incredible, and most cabs sound absolutely like dog IMO and IME.

I hear what you are hearing... but the DB750 and the AG500 (bloomy low end, a bit mushy in the mid midss, upper mid polite, and attentuated up top) really result in cabs sounding quite a bit different compared to other heads IMO and IME.

There are a zillion threads from guys tying to make their DB750's 'work'.:hiding::D

This is one of those areas where terms can get crossed. The GS cabs are "scooped" and the DB cabs are "mid-forward". People read that and think the GS will have more low end thump and the DBs will be tamer. In fact, the DBs mid-forward tuning includes a LOT of LOWmids, which is where that booty comes from. It's the same reason that some of the people who initially went the "fEarful" route are now returning to more traditional/modern bass rigs. Our tech side says we want flat response, but our artist/booty shaking side wants a particular sound and feel and that doesn't always mesh with the techy side of us. A LOT of people love their Fearfuls, and they're a great design, but they don't end up working out for everybody.

The DB 410 has a lot of bottom end

My GS112's are side lined, I found an Epifani T310 series 2 that works better as far as the lows go.
Anyone have any input on Bergantino DNA in the older Epifani cabs?
There was a GS412 really cheap in LA for a long time on reverb, the Bergantino 412 is better.
