True. I know we are seeing more class D stuff do this now. Other topologies were doing it a little earlier I think. If you don't mind carrying it you can always take a out off these heads to an old crown power amp or something and do 2ohm all day long with insane power.

I doubt it. Totally different voiced preamps. I think for a lot of guys, if they like the AG700 they might not like the TH700 and vice versa.
Not in my view either. It's plenty for me, and an honest 500w imo. Plenty with one 115 for most or 2 115s and it'll do most any gig
I thought it clipped super easy but I was running it at 8ohms to an aguilar db410 and it couldn't keep up with the loud rock band on most occasions. Worth noting though that I only ever used it as backline gear from a rehearsal company. Good amp and good tones but if you aren't pulling a 4ohm load with it to get it's full power you may be underwhelmed and somewhat limited. Lack of power is what kept me from pulling the trigger on the TH500 after I played with it as I did like the preamp and the sounds I could get with it. The 700 is appealing to me and not necessarily because I think it will be a lot louder but will just have that added head room that will allow you to push it when you need to.
The controls on the TH500 trip some people up. Run it with the master open and use the gain knob for volume control and adjust drive to taste. If you try to run it with the master lower than noon or one and boost the gain it will trigger the clip light. It should be plenty loud with a 410.
I'll have to try that next time I'm using one. I used it like a typical master/gain set up.
So, just following up on my question in Post#18, is there a possibility of upgrading just the power section of the 500 to the power section of the 700, given the controls are the same and the dimensions are pretty close. I contacted Aguilar and their response was that there is "more going on than just the difference in the power sections" so it's not a simple power amp swap-out. I didn't ask for more detail about the "more going on..." since it sounded like the upgrade would not really be cost effective.
You made such a good argument that I bought a D800.
I already own 2 TH500's ( for more wattage & to do 2 ohms) but can get all that with one Mesa Subway D800.
Can't wait to try in a live setting but for now will have to settle on ticking off my neighbors in apt. building tomorrow..
I don't think they're weak. You can run it with the gain all the way down. Many people don't understand the gain controls and they run the pre gain hotter than they need to, making it clip easy. But it's designed to be ran into clipping, if you want an overdrive sound. You run it with clip light on constantly and it won't hurt the amp.
It’s funny...on the big Tone Hammer thread plenty of people say that it’s loud for a 500W amp...clearly we can’t make up our minds around here
Never had problems getting volume out of my TH350, for what it’s worth.
The ONLY time I had any problems with volume from the TH500 is when I only had 2x12s, where I needed 2x15s at least.

I'am using Ag700 and Tonehammer Preamp/Di this way right now. As theather, live and studio musician I needed versatility and this setup qave it.
Always knew there was some special way the TH was supposed to be tweaked, yet I never heard anyone here elaborate on how you're actually supposed to do so. Chances are the manual instructions weren't dumbed down enough for me either, so anything there probably went over my head (airy up there sometimes). Thanks for the tip!
I have a TH 500 and an AG 700. I've never run out of power with the TH 500 but typically use that head with upright bass on jazz gigs. I have not found another head that sounds really good with the SL 112's and I own a pair of them. The AG 700 with a pair of GS 112's is amazing. Those cabs also sound fantastic with electric bass when used with a GB Shuttlemax 9.2. The GS cabs are my favorites...and are now discontinued. The TH 700 will be a fine head to own. Aguilar makes great equipment IMO.
Be hard pressed to get AG's tone out of Mesa IMO short of using the TH Pedal. It's a special sauce and if that's your flavor nothing else will do. I tried hard to like the Mesa stuff several times and do like the power behind their amps as well as the company itself but never found tones I was completely happy with. Felt like there should be something more. Something round. After getting comfortable with the controls after suggestions on this thread the TH has that in spades and the 700 is a nice addition though I'd have loved to see an 800 or 900 version....because extra headroom is never a bad thing. There's people that love Mesa and aren't fond of AG. It's all subjective but if you know you like the TH you'll be happy swapping the D800 for a TH700. TH's love a p bass and flats.
I got my new TH700 last week and gigged it twice so far. Love it! All the goodness of the 350, but double the power. Boo-Ya.
Several musicians in the audience, and my bandmates, commented on how they preferred the tone from the TH700 when I A/B'd them, and also how great the bass sounded wherever they were in the room. Credit the Bareface as well.
My D-800 just sold on Reverb.
