Sayings like these have always irked me to no end. Success comes in many forms. There are people who are well off but who are in no way fulfilled by the money. Then there are also people who have barely anything but are very happy and content. Who is really the "successful" one?
The richest person I know personally is the emptiest shell of a person I've ever met in my life. The second richest person I know, however, is very fulfilled, and uses her riches to fund her hobby as an oil painter. It doesn't sound like much, but having everything taken care of and being able to enjoy your hobbies is actually all one might need to be truly successful at life, including happiness.
The richest person I know, on the other hand, is just an average dork who has rich parents. His "success" was in being born to a rich family, he has no interests, no hobbies, he just drinks himself to near death every weekend and takes drugs, just because he's so "successful".
Kanye West is successful at what he does, but I would never trade my current state for his 'success' but 'also being a dumbass'. While I don't exactly envy anyone, the only rich people I can truly call successful are those who are also not dumbasses about things that do not lead to financial gain. As such, I'd never wish to be like Kanye West because that includes a dumbass, but I'd like to be someone like Devin Townsend, who, while not rich in any sort of a way, is a madman composer with a great voice and creative force who is also a great human being.
