Haha... 21.

We can drink at 18.

I only like some beers. Crownies are good. Whiskey, Scotch and Bourbon > all. Canadian Club = Best ever.

And by the way. Theres a difference between drunk. And throwing up and passing out.
Canadian Club is just amazing. My current alcohol phase include: Jagermeister, Canadian Club and Tequila. Preferably mixed in high dosages.

Addiction is many-faceted thing. It is true that one sign of being an alcoholic is when you simply cannot live your everyday life without some form of alcohol in your system. But, there are also a variety of others. Some people cannot go to sleep without alcohol but function perfectly throughout the rest of their day. Others can't handle social situations without alcohol. They too are addicted, albeit situation-specific. Of course, there are a many other signs of being an alcoholic. The point being that eventhough you may be able to get through the day without consuming a bottle of Absinthe doesn't mean that you aren't addicted. If you have to question it, then you probably are.

Wow, lots of replies in this thread. let me clarify a few things:

1. I am fully aware that I had too much to drink, but I was not aware at the time.
2. I was not aware of the "dangers" of mixing
3. I understand that alcohol doesn't "suck" in moderation. I was exaggerating.
4. My question on why people would want to do the same thing I did everynight does not apply to everyone. But I know lots of people that go out with the intention of vomiting and passing out. I was also kinda asking what is the point of alcohol. Before I was at the vomiting stage, I just felt a little dizzy and slow to respond to my surrondings. Is that fun? Doesn't seem like it. So the only reasons I can think that people want to drink is because:
A. The taste
B. Prove themselves as manly, to get extra checkmarks on their man card.

Since alot of people on this board drink that Guiness crap that I had, I think it is safe to assume that A is not the case.

With the quantity of alcohol you drank, you probably skipped past anything even resembling the pleasant buzz that is acquired when having a few beers with some friends. If you don't like the way alcohol makes you feel, then that's fine, but it's a bit of a different experience when you aren't drinking yourself into submission. Having a few beers (or whatever) in a social setting seems to be the ideal situation for most of those who responded, and that hardly qualifies as an attempt to get extra checks on the man card. As for those who desire to get totally obliterated, just be glad you aren't one of them. ;)

I'm with you on the Guinness though...I'll never understand why people drink that stuff.

Guiness should drinken at room temp. No one belives me when I say that but it tastes a lot beter that way... the only beer that tastes beter warm. As for drinking, I do sometimes, not often, I prefere dark beers, New Castle, Guiness especially, Fat Tire, etc. Liquor wise, I prefere many types, though recently I discovered the joys of scotch. Alcholism runs in my family, so I know very well to control myself and stomp out anything before it becomes bad.

If you want something entertaining though, try drinking while playing halo, doom, gauntlet or anouther fun high action game, its very very entertaining.

During a tour of St. James gate in Dublin (Guiness Brewery) it was recommended to me that Guiness be served at 4 degrees C. The tour concluded with a free sample of their guiness and yes, it was served at 4 degrees ... a nice chilly beverage.

However, IIRC a rumour started in several countries that the beverage should be served warm (as was customary for cask conditioned ales in England) which prompted Guiness to market "Guiness Extra Cold" - the exact beverage that they were currently making and then serving the same beverage in two taps with two different keg temperatures.

BTW, if anyone here decides to do the St. James gate tour, it comes with tickets for a free pint or two free halfs after the tour. If you are in your 20s or early 30s and go around noon, sit by the door, older tourists are likely to drop off their beer tickets at your table on the way out. Me and a friend made a whole afternoon out of it. :)

I've personally never liked being drunk either. I dont mind getting a buzz, but if I can't drive home safely, then I want no part of it hehe.

And Guiness should be at cellar temp, not room temp. 4 degrees celsius is a little colder than that, but back in the day when they didnt have the best cooling methods, kegs were stored in the cellar of the bar, and thus, served at cellar temperature.

Incorrect, as the saying goes:

"Beer before liquor, never sicker.
Liquor before beer, in the clear."

As a Russian, what do you consider to be the best Vodka?

I like Grey Goose, but I have heard Ultimat is really good as well.

Wouldn't know, myself. Can't stand the taste of the stuff, but I've heard the same.

In words on Mitch:

I-I like to drink red wine... this girl says "doesn't red wine give you headaches", Yeah, eventually, but first and the middle part are amazing... I am not gonna stop doing something because what happens in the end... Mitch do you want an apple? "NO!!!! Eventually it will be a core!...

Yeah... that one of my biggest problems... finding good vodka outside Russia...
I'd have to say so far stuff outside Russia Grey Goose is one of the better ones... There is also "Finlandia" which is pretty good from what i remember... I think Columbus Vodka (polish) is not bad... There are few out there made by Latvia... Generally I would go for Polish, Finish and sometimes Swede vodka... Stuff that sounds like Russian usually doesn’t taste all that good...

I personally love Christal, staraya moskva and few other Russians vodkas... but they only tasted great in Russia... outside I either couldn’t find it or when I did it was crappy...

Something about stuff that was sold there:/ no idea what... maybe the polluted water they use gives it smoothness

I'll update you as i go:) I'll try Ultimat this weekend:)
Cheers

I just have to chime in here, I love to drink beer, beer is my passion, hence seansbrew :) . I have been brewing beer, and making wine and mead for 10 years. I have studied the effects of alcohol on the body thru primary and secondary research. I have on occasion drunk myself silly; however this type of behavior is always followed by regret. Like anything else, alcoholic beverages should be enjoyed in moderation. There were a few times in my life when the challenges were just too much for me to handle. In my moments of weakness I found myself drinking heavy and letting my responsibilities slip. Luckily I was able to rebound and get back on track without completely loosing sight of what was relevant. I think that when one drinks to the point of drunkenness and does it often, they are not completely content with their lives, they are escaping. At least that has been my experience with drinking. I still continue to drink to this day, I am down to one day a week ( about four beers) I drink the fine beers ( Stone IPa, Ale Smith, Four Peaks, Nimbus, Rio Salado, Sam Smith, Arrogant Bastard, Chimay, etc.) and try to enjoy quality versus quantity. I am always aware that drinking can become a problem if I don’t make a conscious effort to control it. I fill my time completely so that I am never idle, because after all, the devil will find things for idle hands to do. :p

Nope, I have found that that rule definitly does not apply to me. I think that Kserg got it right, thinking about it it's been times when I've hopscotched from beer to liquor to beer to liquor that I got sick.
I've found that the most important factor is time, though. If you drink fast, no matter what it is, you'll get stinking drunk or sick easier than when you pace yourself.
sorry but thats not through either. if you drink fast and know that you can handle what your doing then you wont be sick. i go out on a wekend have about 6/7 southern comforts and red, 3/4 pints of miller and whatever else im handed to finish during the night. Im talking all that in a time frame of about 4 hours. i generally will go home fairly with an alright rasp of whats going on around me. I have never once got sick when ive been out. There has only been 3 times where alcohol has made me sick.
time 1: 13 bottles of roilling rock spread over 5 hours then decided it wasnt kicking in so i downed 2 and a half litres of cider in less than an hour. first time drinking cider aswell so that resulted in quite a lot of throwing up in my sleep. (i could have died, never atempt this)
time 2: went out for my brothers stag night, had 7/8 pints of beer, 1 pint of guinness, a baby guinness and a shot of sambuca. first time drinking spirits, totally balcked out woke up still kind of drunk and wsa pretty ill for the day.
time 3: went to a niteclub after downing 3 bottles of fosters, and 75cl of premixed margherita. then went into the club had another 2/3 pints then the free whiskey promotion started. i drank about 6 or so whiskeys and cant remember anything passed the 2nd one. i got mild alcohol poisoning after this one, it was the lethal mixture of spirits which i never suggest. for those of you who dont know margherita cocktails have a double tequilla in them so never mix spirits like that.

so if you drink to what you can handle and even go over it a bit as long as you are not thinking about getting sick you wont.

one other thing. htere are very few drinks that are acceptable for guys to drink
they are any beer, any cider, whiskey (includes jd, southie etc..), and shots of pretty much anything the best though for you guys to try are
1. jagermeister,
2. tequilla
3. brain hemourage(sp?)
4. silver bullet(golchlager and sambuce)
5. sambuca

and the final bit of advice, if you want to drink. its like everything you do you have to train your body first. i have been drinking for about 2 years. for a year and a half all that i drank was beer. then i started going to clubs and thats when i started drinking spirits. if you start off seriously drinking by drinking lots of spirits you will do serious damage to yourself. drinking beer or something else mild like cider will let your body build up a tolerance to alcohol. a lot of people see a tiny measure of whiskey and think, "how can this do me any harm?" what they forget is that that timy measure has at least 40% pure alcohol in it. if you start with this you will not be able to hold so hence the reason trhe original thread starter was violently sick and extremely drunk.

if you just dive in at the deep end you will seriously damge yur liver, so while drinking can be fun. unless you know what the consequences are then just please leave it tho those who know what they are doing.

Funny thing you ppl can only drink at 21, here we start drinking at pretty much 16,altough some may think this is too young, I would claim that at 22 im a much more solid and instructed drinker than you at 21, drinking fast, strong and with no food only takes you on one direction man,to the floor, it also causes strange phenomena like being teleported from the seat of a chinese restaurant to your front door :eyebrow:

I've come to hate pretty much all the spirits unless mixed with something, (whiskey-cola, vodka-lemon), at 18 I was acctually hitting some absynth, dont believe I'll try it ever again being as awful as it is. I also dont drink at meals, only beer at bars and green/red wine during group dinners. I've come to favour black beer with time, It was VERY uncommon for ppl here to drink black beer until a few years back, but its here to stay, nothing beats our home stuff tough, the reason probbaly a lot of brits cant quite recall they're coming to the euro cup last summer!! :D

Dont forget to leave the car at home when you're drinking ;)

yeah im building up to that one. that and a bit of poitin. (pronounced put-cheen) is our version of moonshine. 80%, one shots enough to get mangled.

Not that I have tried it (but look forward to). I dont' drink anything but what you all call "girlie stuff" (mostly sweet liquours, sider, piña colada, Dr. Lemon). I did never get drunk in my whole life -as (un)funny as it can sound-. But I feel this curiosity towards absenta. There's no restriction here in Spain about tuyonas' content in absentas (don't know how this is in english, it's the psycho-active ingredient in absenta).

Like with almost everything, it's a matter of measure (and sometimes, even method) to really keep enjoying something through the years. I've been smoking pot for 10 years, but I do it 5/6 times a year and choosing the right moment to fully enjoy it. This way I do very reduced harm to my valuable brain :D and my organism creates no resistance so I never need more than a couple deep breaths to get to the point where I enjoy it. I would never conceive any other way of recreative smoking/drinking.

Funny... i remeber buying beer at age of 10... Only worry of the store was that i was going to stand outside and sell it for more to people who dont want to wait in line. when i explained that we will drink it they finally sold it to me...

1st got drunk at age of 8 because i took all the skin of my leg riding a bike and my grandfather thought it was a good idea to poor some vodka on my leg to get the germs... When i started to scream he poored rest of it in my mouth for pain:)

And look at me... i am not an alchoholic... i am not... really... "nows who's leg i have to hump here to get a dry martiny"
