For the record, I had these exact two units in a simple PA rig a couple years ago. The 3630 was only fit to gate the kick drum and it did that just fine. Well, that and of course it held the door open during load out.

I haven't had any of the issues, with my 3630, I keep reading about. No clicks, no killing of the high end, no distortion... But again, it came modded. MINE works fine. I should buy another one to hear the difference.

Wow, someone's awfully fond of their 3630... How can you make snide remarks towards people for dogging on it when you don't even have a stock one to judge for yourself?

I've had both, and for bass, the 3630 is utter garbage. It may be a budget piece, but there are better comps out there for the money.

I voted for the 166xl. I used one in the effects loop of my SVT III Pro and it did what I wanted it to pretty well. Smoothed out my sound a little, limited my occasional peaks, and functioned as a (very obvious when soloed) noise gate. I got mine for $100 on ebay, but I sold it when I got rid of my rack setup.

It's funny that you say I'm the one fond of hearing my own voice (on an online forum of all places...), yet you're the one who keeps posting about your modded 3630. I don't believe the OP ever mentioned a modded 3630, so your input is basically useless, yet you just keep posting.

If you're gong to post smart remarks back to everyone who disagrees with you, at least make them relevant and make sense. At least that way, they'd actually sting a little.

I don't care if anyone disagrees. My first post said I have a MODDED 3630. What makes you think I'm saying I know anything about one that isn't modded? I said, later, I was kidding about the 3630 thread.

Not to break up the love going on here, but I own a 3630. I use it only to tame the peaks on the B string. It still sucks. You know something is bad when Behringer gear is a much better alternative.

dbx 166XL sitting in the batting circle...bought it but have yet to install.

I read somewhere that the 166XL's AutoComp (automatic attack & release) smacks of another dbx model although I don't recall which. I'm not sure if this is a widely-used or attractive feature.

I decided to make the move up to Behringer... Actually, I bought a used, rev D, 3630 and a Behringer 2200. I like the Behringer better. One day, I'll buy a REAL compressor.

I've had both, and the dbx is much higher quality and more versitle. But I do agree with some posters that compression must be used lightly or it will hurt your sound more than help it. Bass it all about dynamics, a little limiting is about all you need. I've had great luck using the little dbx 163x one knob wonder box, very light setting, fattens without squashing. A gate following if you get extream with it. I use alot of dbx gear, good stuff.
