Alibaba Bass

If it can reinsure the others that aren't usually users of AliExpress, I placed an order for a 10€ item last month. It was written as sent but the tracking number was clearly fake as heading to another country. I opened a dispute yesterdayin Aliexpress and got a validated answered by AliExpress who stepped in to check within 24h. They will refund the order within 3 days, so your money if safe if something wrong where to happen.

Makes sense, still if you didn't get news for around 2 weeks, I'd ask some news, that would start to tick on my patience haha
It's been like that since the beginning. I'm kinda used to it now.

So, they tore up the fretboard taking out the frets for the inlays.

And, they didn't start at the first fret, like I told him. It was said a few times, and confirmed a few times. He had even sent me a picture for me to confirm what I wanted...and they still didn't do it right.

I told him it was now damaged, I can't accept it. There's chunks taken out of the fretboard all over the neck.

I told him that I need a new neck made, and that I want it done to original spec. Black headstock, shark fins inlays. Like I had paid for when we discussed the spec of the project.

Makes sense, when you said about the modification of the current neck, considering that it was already fretted, I was afraid to see a butcher job. It didn't miss
Did he validate the new neck option ?

Nothing yet. I'll get a response either tonight, tomorrow, or next week, or in two weeks, or after they ship it.

I figured it was the easiest way to do it. Just route out some blocks, and glue them in. I didn't expect them to de-fret it before hand.

But, I pulled my frets out with a 5 way putty knife once. I had one flake come off. I don't really get how they did that so badly. Especially having professional tools and equipment available.

Yes, it looks like it has been made in a hurry. That's too bad, the neck originally was looking great except the wrong inlays. Without this mistake, the bass would very certainly already be shipped out :/

I hope it gets solved fast.

These photos made me cringe...HARD. Yikes...what a mess.

Well, so he's replied.

He said, "but this picture was before its been finished and polished. Let me send you updated pictures after the process."

"So, I might just be overreacting? It looks really bad Jacky. Okay, I'll see what it looks like when the process is complete. If it's not okay, can we proceed with making a new neck?"

"Yes, thank you. I agree with what you have asked."

So, I'm waiting another day or so. I'll see what they can do with that. But my guess is, they're gonna make me a new one. I don't know how that mess is gonna end well.

It's possible but seems pretty unlikely new frets would cover all that chip out.

There's no way that they could have just routed for new blocks without defretting it, because the blocks might need some gaps around them filled, and the whole board needs to be re-levelled after the blocks are installed. Obviously, they should have built it right the first time, but they clearly took "the customer is always right" to heart and it didn't work out.

Okay. I get that.

Yeah. I really think they're wasting their time continuing with this.

Well, fair game at least the decision is yours at the end.

That's actually very impressive. I thought it was for sure a lost cause from the last pictures.
Yeah, me too. I wish they would've started at the first fret, but hell. At this point, whatever. It looks good, I'm good. Give me my bass.

If they don't paint the headstock black, I can do that myself.

Looking back at the pics of the torn up fretboard, it doesn't seem like they lost any huge wood chips. A lot of the chips were probably sanded out when they leveled the board. Either way, I'm flabbergasted that it looks so good now.

I would definitely remind them to paint the headstock. I know how frustration, anxiety, and impatience can make someone say, 'No worries! Just let me do it,' in the moment, but you paid for that service.

very clean after the refin. the grain is very appealing as well.

your pictures are making me wish I had done black binding. i also wish I would have done a 3-5 piece neck. perhaps I'll have them make me a spare neck in the future as well....
You know, the thought had crossed my mind, a while back, about having them make me a couple necks for my other basses. They're just standard fender routes, so it'd be easy for them to match without having the bodies.
