I reckon the 'needing-a-ride' part would be a problem, but if I was a BL needing a bass player who knew what he was doing, I'd consider at least calling him to audition.

Paid in advance, doesn't drive so you have to pick him and his gear up or the band pays for his Uber. Does this strike anyone else as slightly narcissistic?

Fair point.
But...maybe he's actually a touring pro who's been put out of work with Covid and is trying to get back on track.

Heck, maybe he's a TB member who's read all the advice in band management and is just trying to avoid all the grief by putting things up front, like is always advised.

I put up an ad in 2001 where I added "paying situations only."

This was the response I got from one guy. I can't even imagine what the guy in your post is getting, if anyone even goes to Craigslist anymore .

I should add that I was shocked to see the guy who responded is actually doing pretty good for himself these days. He's had some legit musical success, and honestly - I'm happy for him. This might prove entertaining to some Getta Load of this!

I can understand not being into politics. I'm not political myself but I would never walk out mid-gig because someone mentioned something political. That's unprofessional and shows immaturity.

As far as not wanting to practice with the band and just show up knowing the material, this would be problematic because my current band doesn't' play songs exactly note for note - we play around with them and make them our own. For example, we play a pretty mean "Fool For Your Stockings," but it's our own interpretation of ZZ Top's song.

Having good chemistry with the other members of the band is really important to me. I would rather play with a good musician that I got along with and was comfortable around than a great "PRO" musician that is a narcissistic jerk.

That's not pessimistic, it's realistic.

I live in metro NYC and travel throughout the tri state area for gigs. I have played many shows in Freeport. A round trip UBER fare from Freeport which I guess is this guys home will cost at least $100. Having played in the bars we usually get approximately $100. per man give or take a few bucks. Do the math with a 5 piece band.
It’s amazing that during such challenging times and so many musicians looking for work that this guy would make such demands. I would take a hard pass on this guy.. I don’t care how great he plays.

The contrarian in me wants to hire him but talk only about politics in a coded language. Maybe, pig Latin. Iden Bay and Rump Tay. Then when he protests or tries to leave I will tell him I’m sorry. But, I would do it again. If only I lived in Long Island and had disposable income and no real life what so ever. I’d have him wearing a certain political hat by the time we were done.
Or I’d talk nothing of politics but our gig would actually be a political rally. The look on his face.

At least he’s honest and upfront. I’m just trying to have a laugh. More power to him.
