All things Canadian for Basses?

Shoutout for Brass Camel - What could be more Canadian than a 'double-double'? :) ☕

This is all that’s missing in this band:

I'm American but have always been fond of Canada. I've visited various parts of Ontario and the Maritime Provinces and loved everywhere I went.

In the early 70s I played through a Traynor YBA3 and 810 cabinet and it sounded incredible. Then the "opinion leaders" in my area all started using SVTs so I followed the herd and regretted it ever since.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Gino Vannelli, a very unique voice and style.
You might just be Canadian. On December 15, 2025, an amendment was made to the citizenship laws to address a longstanding issue for descendants of Canadian citizens. It’s been interpreted to apply beyond first generation people (born outside of Canada) and actually makes anyone who has ancestors legally a Canadian citizen FROM BIRTH! However, if you want to make it official you need to submit proof of your lineage to that Generation Zero (born in Canada) ancestor to the proper agency and, upon review and approval, they’ll send you a Citizenship Certificate. I got mine on 3/7/26…so that means my decision was made on 3/6/26…my deceased father’s birthday. Seems somehow he may have had a hand in the process from beyond the grave. If interested in knowing more, just google “Canadian citizenship by descent”.

If you can find an old Fury bass out of Saskatoon, they were amazing basses.

Saw The Steadies last year. It's Earl Pereira, (aka Capt. Dingwall) who was the bassist in Wide Mouth Mason. Fantastic player and super fun band.

Also, let's not forget Ken ‘SpiderSinnaeve of Streetheart (now Loverboy) who would probably and arguably be voted best Canadian Rock Bassist if it weren't for Geddy Lee...

Fury basses, the bass player from Kick Axe still plays his Fury Bat on occasion. They are another good Canadian band from back in the day. Nice to see them playing out again.

Rich Brown is a fabulous jazz bassist and is from Toronto area. His channel on YouTube, The Brown'sTone, provides free instructional videos that are some of the best available, IMO.

He plays F Basses - 4, 5, and 6 strings (his favorite), also a Gretsch hollow body. Mostly EB but also some upright. Makes tremendous use of the Pentatonic scale, I consider him the master of that. Mellow guy, great teacher.
I saw him with the Jeremy Ledbetter Trio recently. What a concert!

I did not know this! My maternal Grandmother's family is Canadian. She always described her brothers as "big red-haired Canadians". I'll have to look into this. Thanks for the heads up!

And two of my dogs were Canadian, one from south of Hamilton and the other from Halifax.

Wow - if I understand the quick research I just did, I may likely be a Canadian Citizen? I just have to apply for a Citizen Certificate?!
I've just started learning about my ancestry since my parent's passing, but my mother's grandfather was likely born in 1860 in Gloucester County New Brunswick - and came to Oconto WI - a common destination for French Canadians - where my grandmother was born.

I think its almost mandatory for a canadain basist to own at least one traynor/yorkvill amp in there life time lol
fixed that for you! (or maybe I have to change it back since the discovery above)
YBA 100 is my qualifier! ;)

I'm in the USA but would like to plug a Canadian Co. called Coveramp.com
They made covers for both my Aguilar and MarkBass cabs. They did a nice job and for a very fair price.
:thumbsup: Thanks for the reminder! They're my new favorite - perfect for my needs - and I need to order a set for newly acquired cabs;

... one never knows what the future may bring…if/when I do relocate it may only be for extended periods of time, and it’ll be after I retire.
If only Canada had a location with a climate warmer than Wisconsin!

It's beautiful up there in the Summer.
But winter is only for the thick skinned.

To be clear, if you know you had a Canadian ancestor, going as far back as they may have arrived in Canada, you ARE already a Canadian citizen from birth, according to the new C-3 amendment. My great-grandfather was born in Cacouna, Québec. Other ancestors go back to around 1700 when my original immigrant ancestors came from France.

You understand it correctly! Of course, that application has to have documented proof of your lineage to that Generation Zero (G0) ancestor who was born in Canada. Color, high-resolution copies of certified documents are what they ask for. And you have to supply two forms of government issued identification like a driver’s license and passport (some have successfully used a state-issued fishing license!). And included in the application must be two photos of you taken in the right format (50mmx70mm) by a passport photo type of studio. i did mine at Staples. And there’s a $75 application fee for processing.
There are about 50,000 applications in the queue right now and wait times are about 11 months for standard processing.

If only Canada had a location with a climate warmer than Wisconsin! :

The island of Vancouver on the west coast has probably what you’re looking for.
Yup! Nanaimo and Victoria are in the top five for sunshine hours as well. Okanagan Valley is worth checking out though they can get -4F winters at times.
I've lived a long time in all three locations and would not hesitate to locate back (actually planning to reclaim my studio in Okanagan when I retire in seven years...) PS: happy to steer everyone AWAY from Northwestern Ontario - winters are pure hell over here!

It does. Relatives in WI are farther north than I am.
