Yeah, I am one of SH owners.
What made me choose it over (many) other tube preamps is it's small size and the fact that it can be powered by standard pedalboard power supplies.
Compressor. And that's the only "always on" pedal / amp offering (on acoustic 360). Pedals vs no pedals at all - purely personal choice , and I prefer no pedals other than a compressor.
For me, the "always ons" are the compressor, EQ and DI. Although I'm sure there are a fair amount of folks who'd like my tuner always on too...

I have an excess of always on pedals. Broughton BBA > Master Effects Super 300 > Effectrode LA1A > Broughton RFE > Sonic Farm 2di4 (So the Sonic Farm isn't a pedal, but I actually have it mounted on my pedal board). Distortions, octavers, filters, modulation, and time effects are on and off as needed.

Sadly, I have never believed these things come in little boxes. On the other hand, this belief gets me through our internetted times very well.
Broughton Low + High Pass Filter
Compressor (I actually use two - one on my Fly Rig and one on the Ampeg PF500 head. Is that weird? I dunno, but it sounds good to me)
Sansamp BDDI circuit on my Fly Rig is always on too, though I switch between a slightly dirty channel and a more overdriven channel depending on the song.
Really the only effects I ever turn off or on are the aforementioned channel switch and a fuzz. And I've got one song that I switch from using both pickups in active mode to just the neck pickup in passive, though that's not a pedal effect so I don't know if that counts.
Mostly my tone is consistent with varying amounts of dirt layered on it. I play pretty straightforward rock music.
My amp has a built-in compressor, it's always on; prior to that, I had a separate compressor that was also always on. The only thing new-ish to me is the Broughton HPF, which is always on and such a great add to the chain.
My pedal board is super simple: tuner, HPF, and 2-button footswitch for my amp (Blackstar Unity). That's it.

My Broughton FlipTop preamp/OD is my always-on tone, set for enough gain to warm things up a little and growl a little when I dig in.
My Broughton Apex compressor is always on and set to help level my output as I turn effects on and off.
My Broughton Always-On HPF is, by definition, always on. It has no on/off switch.
I have one other that's always on but which specific unit that is depends on whether or not I'm wireless at a gig. If I'm using my Shure wireless then that is, of course, always on. Turning off the receiver on my pedal board would mean that I produce no sound! If I'm not using my Shure wireless, then I go into my TC Electronic Polytune 3. Since that one is a combination of the Polytune tuner and the Bona Fide buffer, I guess that counts as always-on as well because the buffer is always on.

It depends on how you set them, IME.
