am I a 4-stringer for life?

I did what u did recently. Trade/sold/bought Ray 5er and Lakland 5502.

Both are great basses and Im not dissin 5ers, I just feel 'at home' with 4 bangers. So Im not getting any more 5ers...All those 5ers I got and sold?? Could have been 4 banger keepers..

Home for me is a 4 banger.. Thats just my opinion

Thanks for the thoughts/feedback.

I'm inclined to go on back to 4 exclusively, but for a coupla reasons: 1)I have the feeling that I just haven't given it enough time to get fully comfortable, and 2)I might find those lower notes useful for jamband and reggae (or reggae-ish) settings.

Why does this have to be an "exclusive" decision? Just play what you like when you like. If you like 4s today but 5s next week or next year or whatever, nothing wrong with that. But I wouldn't make this into some sort of major, life altering event. It's just bass.

Edit: I should add that I play both 4s and 5s, go back and forth regularly depending on the band or set list, etc. Each has their virtues. Just play and have fun!

I had a pbass strung with BEAD mainly because the string tension was too high EADG and it was bowing my neck, I really like it. It was fun, the strings I have on there now are too low of tension to have it BEAD, but I will do it some time in the future.

Trust me, I didn't miss the G string one bit, once you tune BEAD you find you rarely use the G at all.

yeah, it's just bass.
Part of it is financial - I really can't afford to have a bunch of 4s, 5s, 6s, fretted and fretlesses sitting around for me to use whenever. And part of it is me wanting to feel "settled" on the issue.

But that's just me and it's a personal decision and only I can decide and yada yada. Yeah, I know ...:D

I think it comes down to the style of music played, influences, (what type of bass your idol or who you look up to plays) size of hands and what feels comfortable in those hands.

I own mostly 5 and 6 strings. I ran across one or two 4 strings that I wouldn't mind owning.

I started on guitar. When I started bass, it was on a 5. Got used to a 5. Played a 5 for 11 years until I wanted another string, so now I have a six with an F# for a year. I've never been able to justify a 4 because I developed my playing and frame of reference on a 5. Like 4-string players that are home on a 4, and could live without a B, I'm at home on a 5 and could live without an F#. Do I use the F# and B on every song? No, and I don't use the G on every song either.
