Am I a cheap bastage?

Whatever guys it's cool, it's a joke I don't find funny but I'm not everyone else....I'll just be moving along now.

No harm, no foul.

Hey, on another note: I see you're from Aus. As chance would have it, I just tried Vegemite for the first time over New Year's. I can't say I hated it, but it was a bit salty for me. You eat that stuff, or is it a fringe food even there?

...You can laugh with her, or feel sorry for her for having the same taste in humor as me.

^that's^ the real real key to it, right there... clearly you "get" each other.

FWIW, I got the joke... I was only playing along on stereotypes. Nothing funny or cheap about the real thing. (divorce attorneys)

I dunno boss. I'm a cheap MF'r. It's kinda crazy to me what I'm willing to spend on gear, or tattoos or clothes or whatever I'm doing at the moment that strikes my fancy, but I'm pissed if they raise the price of milk and do what I can to avoid spending money on day to day things. It's sort of weird. I'm not sure why I'm that way, but I am. Though this seems a bit unpractical, generally speaking, I'm usually very practical. I value logic. I consider myself a realist, which often get's me labeled as a pessimist but it's not true. I can see the bright side of things too, I'm just realistic about my expectations and the world around me based on my experiences. Anyway, I'm all for a no gift exchange holiday. I'm not doing that currently, but fully support the idea. I'd rather we both take the money we would have spent and get ourselves something we really want. I know it's not romantic or thoughtful, but it IS practical, and I have that in spades for sure. And I don't think I need to spend money on my girl, or vice versa to let each other know we care. There are plenty of other ways to be thoughtful and compassionate and romantic.

Buuuuuuut, I do play active basses and my upright has a battery powered preamp. I get all my batteries from the dollar store, for what that's worth. If I'm trying to learn a new song for a gig, I usually practice with an acoustic guitar instead of my basses because I don't want to power up an amp, or take out the upright. You're not alone!

Everyone places a different value on things. My wife and I go out to eat a lot, which horrifies our friends because we sometimes dine in pricey restaurants that we enjoy. Yet, we don't subscribe to cable TV and can't understand how our friends can throw away 90 dollars (or more) per month. Same goes for cars: we both drive 15 year old models that were paid off long ago, which allows us to afford to buy the toys we want. Our friends gawk at all the basses and guitars our living room wall, yet they're paying $350 a month on new cars. That could pay for a lot of basses!

It all comes down to priorities, and that's a very individual thing.

The Christmas gift opt-out was actually started by my parents when I was younger, and I like it for the same reasons they did it: Obligatory gifts for the sake of gift giving are often a waste of money, and on the flipside, if you know somebody wants something and you can afford it, why wait until December to get it for them? The "just because" random gifts make for a really great surprise. Just like flowers that show up at my wife's work out of the blue throughout the year - but never on Valentine's day when the prices are sky-high.

She gets that, and she gets me. Which is why we're together.

Now back to my cheap bastard theme: No dessert for her tonight; she spent electricity watching a stupid girlie show!

I would have thought you were playing along with my little laugh, but at this point I'm not sure. From all the outrage and hatred I'm receiving, you'd think I had made a joke in bad taste about spousal abuse rather than the simple act of not buying someone a physical Christmas gift. I'm really rather shocked at this.

Totally just dumb-joking, not buying stuff is cool with me, and yeah it's just everyone finding an opportunity to be outraged. They're just TO'd they all ate too much chocolate and cheese this Christmas and are feeling bloated and have to join a gym now.

Nah, it's just a testament to the range in tastes. For example, my father had a great sense of humor, but he had absolutely no tolerance for any bathroom type jokes, and actually walked out on the movie Blazing Saddles during the campfire bean fart scene.

Some people are offended by cursing, while others use curses as adjectives in their regular vocabulary. Speaking of which, there are a few iceholes in this thread who know a thing or two about cursing:

Wife and I don't exchange Christmas gifts anymore, but our 5 and 7 year olds "buy" for us anyway, so there's that. My wife and her mom still give each other $50.00 cash or gift cards for birthdays. I suggested that they save the trouble and write nice cards instead.

OP, I agree with someone else here who said people are looking for a reason to be outraged. Your post was in the Humor section after all. Shame it went where it did. :rollno:

  1. thass fine.
  2. all of my outlets stay empty most of the time for for reasons other than and including thrift.
  3. same here. Would/will still do it if/when I'm clearing over $100k/year.
  4. my s.o.'s get stuff I make, when I make them: sculptures, floral arrangements, drawings, etc. A holiday from a dead civilization is no excuse for guilt-buying stupid crap, nor for rushing through and guilt-making artsy trinkets.
Eggs were less than a buck a dozen not very long ago. THREE bucks on my side of the county for the store brand! What are they going to cost in thirty years when I'm three years from retirement and thirty years from the nursing home? What will basic sustenance and pills cost in fifty years? I know this is the humor section, but as someone who makes less than $100k/year, this s h i t is terrifying. I'm saving every stinking penny and every scrap of metal. I don't sell anything unless I'm profiting.
