Am i an alien?

I must be the only bassist i nthe world that completly dislike the slap stuff. The 'pop' tech. i like and even use, just as some other percussive aproches (such as the John Entwistle's type writer). But the slap, FOR ME, is really overrated and kindda anoying.

Am i the only one who thinks like this?

That's pretty closed minded to shoot down everything that's slap. I'm sure there's something out there you'd like.

If he doesn't like slap, he doesn't like slap, so what?
I can understand his position, althought I don't hate slap, it has it's uses OCCASIONALLY, but for some reason, it seems to me most of those who use it, tend to overuse it, and it can get quote annoying after everyone and there mother is slapping away every chance they get. When researching for a bass to back up my Jazz I had an interest in the Squier VM J, and I went to Youtube (my first mistake, I know) and almost every friggin' video of people demoing it was slapping the hell out of it, and those videos(as I personally don't slap) were all pretty much useless to me. There was ONE video out of maybe a dozen that didn't slap, and that was the only one where I could get a proper grip on how the thing actually sounded as it pertains to the sound I was looking for. pretty much all those videos were not really demonstrating the bass as the claimed, they were all pretty much a bunch of show-offs screaming "Look At me!! See how awesome a Slapper I am!"
Useless.
Pllease understand, I know this is not true of all who slap, ther are those who are capable of using the technique with restraint and taste, but I can't help but feel there are far too many slap-wankers around for my taste.
All things in moderation, please.

I don't use slap either, first because I can't (my thumb seems to be somewhat attached the wrong way:D), second because I'm not too fond of it (or else I guess eventually I would have learned it anyhow).
Actually I think the only music involving slap I'm listening to is Mr. Bungle, and there it's even sparingly used.
I hate funk, so that's just lucky for me (not music having funk elements though.)

IMO, slap bass is close to a bass equivalent of guitar shredding, in the sense that it can be really "masturbatory" and boring when overdone. I don't mind it in the right context if it's done with feeling, however.

It doesn't really have a place in any of the music I'm involved in, and so I happily avoid practicing it. :P

I really don`t get the point of this thread expecially in technique...I don`t like Rihanna...half of this planet plays her songs every 30 minutes on the radio...am I alien? no I have taste :) Am I concerned about the fact that I don`t like Rihanna? no....actually I`m very happy about it :) You like what you like and you don`t like what you don`t like :)))

I think (good) slapping is impressive, but I've never found it to be terribly musical.

But I don't hold anything against the folks who love it. Whatever floats yer boat - right?

^^This reflects my opinion. I can appreciate the technique involved in different styles of music without liking it or having any desire to play like it.
