Am I being unreasonable?

I'm not going to see some random until I've had a chat and like what I've heard/gauged how we got on. If that chat went well, it might inspire me to go see someone's gig and maybe change my plans,
but I'd feel that person was a bit intense and a potential flag if that all came before we done anything more than swap e mail.

Well, I have a choice.

I can drop everything I might have planned-- my kid's birthday, my nephew's wedding-- on short notice and go to your gig where (no offense meant) the odds of you being something interesting and useful for my band's needs are not high, or I can ask you to do exactly the same thing I'm asking every other interested person to do, which is come to my prearranged rehearsal location at a mutually agreeable time so that we can all see for ourselves how it's going to go.

You seem to think that it makes a lot more sense to drop everything on short notice than I do. If possible I'd go with a week's notice, or two weeks, but not a day. That's because one out of every 20 or so people I've met through Craigslist is someone I wanted to work with. Sorry, but that's just how it is and some of us are not willing to rearrange our lives on such short notice when the odds of it working out are that low.

Also, the fact that you don't get this after it's been explained to you sort of speaks to an elevated sense of self importance that's a big red flag I wouldn't want to bother with. If you aren't willing to stand in the same line with all the other candidates, I really don't need you in the line at all.

Preach sista! I love your responses.

I might MIGHT go see a guitar player or a vocalist if I was free. A bass player? Yeah, no. Add me to the camp that your expectations that they aren't serious because they won't come see you on a Friday with 24 hours notice? Yeah, I don't think I'd bother even scheduling an audition. My first impression was that you were high maintenance and a red flag/annoying hang.

Nothing left to add at all.

I thought AITA was a reddit thing? Anyhoo, my $0.02.

I agree that having the potential new band come and watch you in action with your current band is a great way for them to get a feel for your skill and style to see whether you might be a good fit. I'd likely make the same offer myself (I'd tell my current bandmates about it first, to avoid any embarrassing conversations).

That said, you did say "I see an ad on Craigslist for a band forming two towns away, the format seems interesting...". I could be wrong, but that last bit made me think they have something going on that's quite different to the current band, whether that's the style of music or some unusual instrument choices or a unique stage act. It may be that seeing you in your current band would have very little relevance to the new project.

But regardless, Friday night is a popular night for people to have already made plans. I don't think you're being "unreasonable" (your word) but perhaps a bit of an overreaction to their BL's unavailability at very short notice.

So Anyway, you made a reasonable invitation. They declined, in a reasonable manner. So far, everybody's been reasonable.

Yes, you'd be there in a shot, but they declined. They probably want to see how someone plays in their band, not the band you're currently with.

Their band, their audition rules & schedule.... no matter how Fabulous someone is. :woot:
