Yes, you're being unfair. There's more to their lives than you, and watching you at a gig wouldn't tell them how hard it would be to work with you. Also, have you thought about what would happen if your two bands wanted to play the same night?I am a bass player in a band, but would like to perhaps join a second band. I see an ad on Craigslist for a band forming two towns away, the format seems interesting. So I send an email, mentioning that my current band is playing out tomorrow night at the local brewery. I give the time and place in the message.
Almost immediately I get this in response: "Hi...I am not sure if I will be able get by there tomorrow. Let me know if you want to talk by phone."
The gig is ten miles from where the poster lives and he can't make it?
None of the three members can make it?
Am I being unreasonable in thinking that them hearing and seeing me in a band context is the best and most efficient way for me to audition? And if they pass it up, or poster does not tell the others, then probably it's for the best?

I sort of see going to the gig as a win-win for all involved. If I don't have the look, or the chops, or j'en sais quoi, then the rest move on and at least they got to take in the atmosphere.
If they do like what I potentially bring, then we can have more discussion.
If I were seeking bandmates, and was invited, I'd be there in a shot.
Of course, I wouldn’t want my wife (current BL) to meet my girlfriend (potential BL), but not everyone cares.
And you would probably cancel another gig to see someone else's show? Do you know why they can't make it?I sort of see going to the gig as a win-win for all involved. If I don't have the look, or the chops, or j'en sais quoi, then the rest move on and at least they got to take in the atmosphere.

This is how you are being unreasonable, expecting everyone to simply agree that your idea is the greatest and fall in line. For whatever reason, the band you want to audition for can't align their lives to fit your vision. As a professional one would expect you to accept that, make the phone call and figure out when you're going to audition. If I were the prospective band leader and you continued to push the issue I would flag you as "difficult to work with" and move on.I sort of see going to the gig as a win-win for all involved. Sure it could be convenient, but would you cancel, for example, on a dinner celebrating your wedding anniversary to go see a stranger’s band? Would you skip out on your child’s birthday party? You don’t know what commitment they may already have, and frankly, you should re-center on the idea that it’s not all about you, nor all about, “the band, man!”I sort of see going to the gig as a win-win for all involved.
