Am I being unreasonable?

So OP two pages in and all posters agree that you need to chill and let go of your desires and conclusions about them not making your show.

Let me state that again: two pages in and ALL POSTERS AGREE. I checked out my window to make sure hell hadn’t frozen over.

Given the statistical aberrance this thread represents, you should just push the “I believe” button and take the advice to heart at this point. Give them a call, set up an audition. When they ask you how the gig went tell them is was fun.

I sort of see going to the gig as a win-win for all involved. If I don't have the look, or the chops, or j'en sais quoi, then the rest move on and at least they got to take in the atmosphere.

If they do like what I potentially bring, then we can have more discussion.

If I were seeking bandmates, and was invited, I'd be there in a shot.
I think the invitation was a fine idea if it had worked out, for the reasons you mentioned, as well as just supporting the local music scene. I think this thread is more about managing expectations and what would be considered “reasonable” expectations.

I also think it was a good idea for you to bounce this off other working bassists that are on this site. Obviously, if you didn’t think it was possibly unreasonable, you wouldn’t have posted. Certainly, there is a consensus, which is remarkable here!

But it seems to me that there has also been a fair amount of piling on. I did not take your second post as “doubling down“ so much as expanding on the reason that you thought it was a good idea in the first place. But I do think there is interest in seeing how this thread has affected your expectations, about which we really haven’t a clue at this point.

The gig is ten miles from where the poster lives and he can't make it?
None of the three members can make it?

Am I being unreasonable in thinking that them hearing and seeing me in a band context is the best and most efficient way for me to audition? And if they pass it up, or poster does not tell the others, then probably it's for the best?

is it unreasonable to want them to hear you in that situation, no.
is it unreasonable to expect everyone to be available at your beck and call on short notice, yes.

unreasonable, inconsiderate, undiplomatic, psychosomatic, not clinical, highly critical, one might even say asymptomatic.

all of your questions can be answered when you show up to their audition! call the guy and make an appointment for an audition --- be reasonable! --- good luck!

I am a bass player in a band, but would like to perhaps join a second band. I see an ad on Craigslist for a band forming two towns away, the format seems interesting. So I send an email, mentioning that my current band is playing out tomorrow night at the local brewery. I give the time and place in the message.

Almost immediately I get this in response: "Hi...I am not sure if I will be able get by there tomorrow. Let me know if you want to talk by phone."

Yes you are being extremely unreasonable. That's short notice, plus there is really no reason they should be obligated to come see your current band for your "audition." That's not really an audition now is it? You playing with a totally different group?

No, you're being unreasonable to have an expectation for a group of guys to mobilize with one days notice to come see your bar band. Furthermore the most efficient audition would be the one with the band you're trying to join.

I don't care how well a drummer gels with a bass player who's not me, I want to know what our chemistry would be

The thinking in this thread is quite unanimous for TB, and I'm in agreement as well. I've already got plans for tonight (playing a gig), so I can't make it to your show either. :D

Someone brought up the point of band chemistry, and I'll expand on that:
It's important to play with the band you're auditioning for, because you are auditioning them just as much as they are auditioning you. I would be extremely hesitant to commit to a band without playing with the whole band first.

5sg.
