Yep, that Ampeg stuff, you'll sound just like everyone else out there if you use it. Your personality, your playing style, the bass you use...none of it matters once you plug into an SVT. You will sound exactly the same as everyone else.

Pretty much. It's a great sound, only thing is everyone and their mother wants an SVT, and tries to sound like they have one. +1 Jimmy. Don't get me wrong, its an awesome sound, but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overused.

So what? If it's an awesome sound, why would it matter how many people use it? I use it because -I- like it. I could give two craps about others using it.

There are at least 10 amp manufactuers I don't like.
SWR, EDEN, PEAVEY, just to name a few.
Any USA made Ampeg tube amp, is a tone machine.
SVT, VB4, B15, B25.
But is it a tone you like?
They are crayons in a box, pick one you like.

P.S. I don't like beets, but other people eat them.

Oh well. Lots of people play Fenders, Musicmans, etc. and use GK, Mesa, etc. etc. No matter what you may sound like someone else. I guess either way you're screwed!

It just seems that Ampeg (esp. when played w/a P or J Bass) has become the Marshall of the bass world.

Love their tube amps, really like some of their hybrids (SVT 4 Pro for example) & don't much care for their SS amps. Buy what you like.

To tide you over, get a Sansamp VT Bass pedal. For $150, it's the next best thing to having an SVT tuber. Greatly improves the sound of the SVT 350. And then sell the 350 and buy another tuber...there's plenty of them out there!

I've tried every ampeg I can get my hands on and I just cant seem to get a good sound out of any of them... If you have an ampeg, why do you like it?

You're not crazy if you don't like Ampeg, because we all like different things. But to say you can't get a 'good sound out of any of them'... that seems a little weird. Maybe it wasn't 'your sound' -- totally understandable. But to say none of them were 'good'... well maybe you just meant good for your particular taste.

It would be like someone saying Rickenbacker Basses don't sound good. Umm no... you may not like the way a Rick sounds, but saying it 'doesn't sound good' is over-stating your opinion.

Hey, play whatever you want. If you don't like Ampeg, don't play it and feel free to talk about it. I got no problem with that. But I don't see how anyone could say that everyone sounds alike when they use it. You said a controversial and untrue statement and basically said that people who use Ampeg are sheep, and insinuated that if you play something else you will stand out. That ain't the least bit true. You stand out if your playing stands out, not because of the gear you use.

I have played through a number of Ampeg SVT's. All surprisingly different though the bass was the same. I am a flaming contrarian and bought a Mesa 400 Plus which has its thing. Some things like Hiwatt, Marshall, Sound City, and Orange in 100 watt and greater form can be lots of fun. I like their old 7027A loaded V4B better than the newer incarnation. I started bass playing with an SB-12 which was low power bvut wonderful for what it was.

The most compelling argument for an SVT is the amount of live and recorded material done with them as they were for years the default monster bass amp. It's like being fond of a Fender Precision because so many familiar tones came from there.

Of course people who play through the same amp (and similar basses) are going to sound similar. It's shared characteristics...

The same can be said of all those new-jazz and gospel cats who play through the super modern amps.

To the OP - you're certainly not alone - I've played tons of Ampeg gear, and the only stuff I'd buy is their tube amps, and SVT810 and 410 cabs... Their hybrids and SS amps are lame, IMO - same thing with the rest of their cabs...

I'm with this guy!!!! I can see why someone would enjoy the Ampeg sound. But for me the GK sound is more my style. Too me the GK sound is less colored which allows for better manipulation. Ampeg's have such a distinct sound that you can't really do something besides that Ampeg sound.

being that i own two Ampeg SVT's as well as a GK 1001RBII, i can't agree at all with this statement. they both have a 'colored' sound and are about the same in tonal flexibility and IMO, the Ampeg possibly has a slight edge in that department.
