I've never like the Ampeg sound alone, but I have to say that I played through a borrowed B2re and a 410hlf once and it was the best I've ever sounded (at least to myself) in the mix.
Go figure.

Am I crazy not to like Ampeg??

It's not what's better, but what works best for you in a given situation.
I'm a hug Ampeg fan, SVT-CL, 3Pro, old V4B, transistor B15, and NOS B100 & G10 practice amps.
In my living room for practice, I like the tube Ampegs; with my current band, the Yamaha PB-1 pre with a power amp works better with a Berg322.
They're just tools, many different wrenches for different projects.
You don't have to like them, but it would be educated to respect what they have accomplished.

And IMO (and many others will agree) the B2RE is BY FAR one of the worst products Ampeg has ever produced. I gigged one extensively for 2+ years, so I do have enough experience to comment on this head, I think.
Not a big fan to say the least after I ABed it with other products.
Having said that, I still love and gig my SVT-CL, but it sounds like an Ampeg. It isn't for everyone.
I also currently use a GK 1001RB-II and a Genz Benz Shuttlemax 12.0. Different sounding heads for different types of music.
The Ampeg sound vs. other heads is like comparing Fender to Warwick. To each their own.
Naw, not crazy. I have never played through an Ampeg that I've liked either! I will say though, I've not played through one of their famous 70's tube heads. Maybe that would change my mind?
All tube is "Ampeg" sound. Far different from anything merely labeled "SVT-XX", which is solid state.

ok, now that i've gotten that out of my system - here's my take. i've tried ampeg and didn't like it. but - that was only their SS stuff. buddy of mine used to run an SVT-2 and it was brutally awesome.
YMMV.

To be honest, I sorta used to dislike them because they were so popular and because the one I'd played through for like two rehearsals didn't blow me away. Plus, I was never really an amp nerd anyway and always believed that your bass was a lot more important than what you played through (provided that it is somewhat reliable and loud enough).
Then my guitarist, who was never really happy with my amp, made me try out an Ampeg B500 DR (I know, nothing fancy and it's solid state to boot) because it could be had for pretty cheap. What can I say, it indeed had a tighter sound to it than my Peavey Firebass (which sometimes sounded a bit brittle in the highs) and my band liked it better too so I sold the FB and bought the B500 DR. So yeah, looks like I kinda did a 180 there.

To each there own. For me personally I love my ampeg-CL. It has that sound that I love and that tone that is killer. I play shows with other ampeg-cl users and we don't have the same sound.
It's funny because sometimes I see people trash on that "ampeg sound" but use a VT bass or a sansamp.
And btw I do love mark bass heads and the Mesa 400. So I'm not just and ampeg guy. I'm a good tone enthusiast

In the past few weeks I've been thinking about Ampeg. But it seems that to get the BEST Ampeg is to find an OLD SVT.
And, I'm not too sure that I want to drop a lot of cash on a nearly thirty year old, or older amp. So, I am beginning to have my doubts about Ampeg. I have heard that the new ones are nowhere near what the old ones are and the SVT-VR is like 2K!
I am back to the drawing board for now. One thing I am pretty sure of is that I want 2 2X15 cabs and those new Peavey's look pretty good. I have had Peavey gear for awhile and they are tanks!
To each his own and nobody is crazy to not like something just because everyone else thinks it is "hip".
Sure, if I had a lot of cash, I'd go out and find two old MINT SVT's and 8X10 cabs for each, but I'm not that rich. Yet.
Oh, and isn't Rocco playing through GK amps now?
I'm kind of a newbie here.I might have signed up in 2004, but shortly afterwards I lost all of my passwords and plain forgot all of the sites that I was visiting back then. Then a few weeks ago, I was searching for a good site for bass guitar info, and whala!,. I stumbled into this place again. Now I'm here to stay. This is a great site for us bass players.
And one thing is for sure.
EVERYONE here was a noobie at one point.
I don't have to go with any of them, but I do like to hear all of the opinions.
In the end, I form my own and make up my mind, but this seems to be a brutally honest site without all of that fanboi gear worship that goes on in some magazines.
