Absolutely agree with that Jim, it's the apparent incompetence and bias of this lot that is causing the problem, but I take the point that with the prevailing conditions, the best and brightest would probably not choose that career path.

My country is 155th in that league!
Don't know how many members of the US judiciary/prosecution service need protection in relation to that point.
In the specific case of Amanda Knox, most commentators and observers seem to agree that they have made such a pantomime of the case that getting an objective, evidence based verdict is pretty difficult.

That seems quite possible. A general observation (made by some commentator regarding the Oscar Pistorius trial) is that trials conducted under the spotlight of massive international publicity tend to produce bizarre verdicts.

having watched a few high profile u.s. trials i'll posit that the jury selection process kills a lot of them before they even start.....the higher the profile the easier it seems to be for defense atty's to hand pick and retain morons that would have a hard time finding their way to the courthouse....

A factor in the US is that most cases don't go to trial because of plea bargaining, so we really have no way of knowing how many defendants are actually guilty of anything.

Most criminal cases don't even go to trial because of plea bargaining. The "crap shoot" aspect of high profile trials may simply reflect the general quality of criminal indictments.
