Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Which Om CD do you have? I've seen them live many times and if you've got one of the first couple releases the show will not reflect that version of Om. I say that just as a statement of fact, not as a value judgment.

I'll add that you should do everything you can to get as close to his rig as possible. (Though for a bass player I suppose that goes without saying.)
I had Pilgrimage. I never really got into it, until I heard it playing at someone else's house, then I was like "what is this?"

That happens to me sometimes, I have expectations that aren't met so don't really like it, but when I hear it without expectations my ears perk up

The place they're playing is interesting - it's a converted movie theater - for the longest time it was in its original form with just one massive screen - used to go see Hong Kong films there on Thursdays. They'd play 2 showings of two movies, I remember seeing Spinal Tap there (first time on the big screen though I'd seen it many times on video), then A Mighty Wind for the first time, then watched Spinal Tap again! Anyway, in the new setup the stage is really high from the area right in front, but there are two "balconies" that are more on the level of the stage. Not sure which space I like better, I have only seen one show there since they renovated it.

Seriously. It’s sort of that time in history. I interviewed Smith around 2011 or 2012–he was very welcoming, and the thing that struck me at the time was how tightly-knit the people in his shop seemed to be.

for sure. i have a friend who’s been there for a couple of decades (and his wife too, i think) and i get the impression that it was very much a family kind of vibe (kudos to smith for that).

we’re losing some giants in the music tech field (turner, him).

Bow your neck under that blissful yoke
Of sovereignty, not of servitude,
Which men call marriage or wedlock;
And think, lord, among your wise thoughts
How our days pass in various ways,
For though we sleep, or wake, or roam, or ride,
Ever flees the time; it will wait for no man.

Since we're basically at the halfway point of the year, what are everyone's favorite ambient releases of the year so far?
I have to say Tangerine Dream's Raum:

I haven't been able to find the CD, but will buy it when I do! I just opened my CD of the Probe 6-8 EP and it has more detail about each track, including that Edgar Froese is listed as performing on some of the tracks - apparently they went back into the archives and utilized some of Froese's sequences and recordings.

Not sure I got anything this year that is ‘ambient’ strictly speaking, but two laid back recordings I’m loving are:

I think I posted Drummachinemike’s last record here and most didn’t like it. I dunno, I got a weird place in my heart for this dude

Spending my first day trying to learn the Instruo Arbhar granular module. Just messed with running percussion with it so far and it’s seriously nutty stuff. I should be able to get some cool loops for the samplers though. Gonna mess with vocals and bass later today to see what I can get.

For a ‘granular’ module it sounds nothing at all like Clouds, or even Morphagene for that matter. I see that as a good thing as I burned out on Nebulae2 and Morphagene kinda quickly when I had them. Both of those are awesome for sure, but I just could seem to get where I wanted to go very often

cool. the nebulae seems interesting, mostly cause it seems like you can do live stereo processing and not just recorded processing.
