when I talk about electronic music most people think I'm talking about boots and pants and boots and pants...

I've often thought it was unfortunate that it all just gets called "electronic music." As opposed to... guitar music? Piano music? Voice music?

But then, I had a friend who thought Skinny Puppy was "techno" so I gave up long ago on things making sense.

On the other hand, I like Kraftwerk, beats and all. I guess because I see it as pop or proto-New Wave it all fits perfectly. Taste in music is weird.

I just gotta say I love all these euphemisms for contemporary EDM! I've been calling it "Oon-Tis" for a while now, glad to see I'm not the only one.

Hmm, that's a tough one, probably because a lot of what I've been listening to wasn't out this year, but in the last few.

I still can't seem to get enough of Martin Stürtzer.


In other news, finally getting to see Steve Roach in NYC this weekend which is to ambient what 'Trane is to jazz to me. It's a BFD, as the guy's probably been my biggest influence since I took the plunge in to synthland. Then I'm getting my old-man on and seeing McCartney at Fenway on Tues.

I realized that I subscribe to Martin Stürtzer - it's just that I don't really use YouTube in a way that I'm jumping on new videos from people I subscribe to. But I do like his performances/videos, especially when his cat appears!

And after he presumably listened he said, “I’m gonna let my daughter listen to this. She loves EDM!” There’s also people who think basically all electronic music is ‘techno.’
I dunno, I still like doing electronic stuff and hope to get good at it one day, so I reckon I’ll just keep going

To be fair, the term "heavy metal" was not yet really defined until at least the late 70s; any heavy rock band was getting the label, including bands like Rush (who admittedly got into 70s metal territory with a few songs like Necromancer and Cygnus X-1).

Now there are younger people out there trying to say that Black Sabbath isn't a metal band (ridiculous!), which shows how much perceptions have shifted. I have a friend who grew up on 90s metal who tells me that Tool is not metal, but I'm old enough to remember that a band that sounds like Tool would absolutely be considered metal back in the 70s and 80s.

There are some funny classifications. I'd say Sabbath was the birth of metal as a genre, though I recognize there were other bands that had overlapping characteristics. I know this isn't a terribly controversial or original thought.

I will say that I wish certain modern styles weren't considered metal, but I have no expectation that anyone will agree with me. I can't see certain prog and tech death bands as "metal." They cross into distorted jazz and I can't put it in the same group as someone like Obituary. Certain crossover bands that bridge punk and metal strike me as mostly hardcore punk, but that's another fine point to argue for most listeners.
