I think this was pretty good. Even though I have mixed thoughts about the idea of TD continuing with no original members, they seem to have some integrity in their music.

Hmm, that's a tough one, probably because a lot of what I've been listening to wasn't out this year, but in the last few.
I still can't seem to get enough of Martin Stürtzer.
In other news, finally getting to see Steve Roach in NYC this weekend which is to ambient what 'Trane is to jazz to me. It's a BFD, as the guy's probably been my biggest influence since I took the plunge in to synthland. Then I'm getting my old-man on and seeing McCartney at Fenway on Tues.

I’ve only listened to the first 3 tracks/shows (each track is around an hour long), but I like it a lot so far. Most of it is super dry and tight, which is fine by me. It’s good motivation to try not to ‘rescue’ songs with fx and work harder to get the song right

Yep, But I have to admit that I never really went digging in his discography under his real name.
I really like Phelios though, excellent stuff.
With Thorsten Quaeschning as Froese's named (?) successor and Hoshiko Yamane having been with him for 4 years (I had that wrong, she joined in 2011 & Froese died in 2015), there's a continuity. And there are plenty of vault recordings to resurrect Froese's ideas and manipulate in the tradition of electronic music! I love how they list him as a performer, and we get to hear sequences that he came up with - I can't complain, though I'm sure others can and do...

From what I can tell, Phelios is a bit darker, but the more I listen to it, it all just sounds like him to me. His tutorials are pretty dope.
I saw Steve Roach a few years ago at the Gatherings in Philly. His set ran on so long that the host (Chuck Van Zyl) had to remind him to wrap it up, because they were supposed to take his gear down and do a live set on Van Zyl's radio show down the street later that night.
As for his performance, I thought his music was okay but it was more ambient and less sequencing than I prefer, and by the end of his long set I was about done for the night. I had to leave immediately so I could catch the train back to DC, too, so there was an anxiety factor as well for me.
I have a hunch there's gonna be a fair amount of sequencing at this one. I like his really ambient stuff, too.
i though the pc website said 4 voices, but the video i just watched says 24?
and, old guy rant here: there are all these amazing synths out there and eventually four on floor ends up being in every damn product video. ugh.
With poly, I feel like fully modular might be a bit much, but what do I know? I was eyeing the Doepfer poly system when I bit on a Perfourmer. I felt like the Doepfer was powerful but a) crowded and b) not yet fully realized. I feel like some basic normals are handy to have, especially for routing CV and such, and enough poly synths allow CV input that there are diminishing returns at a certain point.

It gets pretty frustrating for sure. I just try really hard to listen to the sounds and look for performance features in product demonstrations. There are several youtubers who are great at explaining gear but their music is tough for me to sit through. I still watch and see if it’s something I’d be able to make use of for what I like to do.
I also spend time at Elektronauts because it’s a fun place to discuss electronic music gear, but the majority of folks there seem to be devoted to techno, which I’m just not into, but some of those folks are seriously gifted with sound design. Sadly, the ‘oonz, oonz, oonz, oonz’ gets tacked on and tends to ruin it for me.
I wish I could remember the artist…but there’s a very well known and well paid ‘DJ’ in Berlin who releases records where he removes all the dance music elements and makes seriously compelling music. But when he performs live, he puts all the oonz oonzes back in. Decent compromise
totally. people with serious chops, but nothing musical *for me*. i do think i'm the wrong demographic, sorta how my father felt about rock music and so forth. guess i'm more an "idm" guy.

My other pet peeve is "tribal rhythms" or whatever you call it, which is something I run into with a lot of ambient/spacemusic musicians. A few times I've gone to see someone whose music I really liked only to have him start in with that tribal rhythm stuff and ruin the magic for me. Ian Boddy comes to mind; one of my favorite electronic music pieces ever is one of his, but when I saw him live he did the tribal rhythm thing...

if you add some reverb and bury it in the mix, it's all ambient.
