Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

at least 25 years ago, i remember hearing stories about ratm playing somewhere and telling some other musicians how they got all this cool free stuff from adidas.

iirc, one of the guys laid into them for kissing corporate a$$ when they were allegedly so anti-corporate.
I know Tool can be a divisive band, but at least they're honest...

I sold out long before you'd ever even heard my name
I sold my soul to make a record, dip****
And then you bought one

Chuck D is a legend in my book but the Prophets (Profits) of Rage was a clear cut money grab.
and they sucked live,

off lawn now.

Not an arcade button but imo the most well known “kill switch” user is Tom Morello.
If I have to explain what he did to anyone on here I’m going to scoop my eyeballs out with a rusty spoon

I don't know how Tom Morello does it, but fwiw when we were kids (well, ~19-20 years old, so circa 1979-80) it was trivial to do with any guitar that had standard Gibson 2-pickup wiring with separate volume & tone for each pickup, and a 3-way selector switch: Turn one pickup's volume to zero, put the selector switch in the middle (both pickups) postion, crank the amp to get a butt-ton of feedback from your one live pickup, and then tap out Morse Code rhythms by moving the pickup selector switch between the dead pickup and center (both) positions.

If Tom has a dedicated button for this I'm smh.

he just added a kill switch on his crap blue guitar on the bottom « wing, horn » area.
to try to imitate what a DJ would do on the 1s and 2s.

fwiw, pretty sure david torn has something like this.

the advantage is that you can do it with any pickup combination you have selected at the time you want to activate it.

I have dual volumes and a pickup switch on my #1 so I can do the killswitch thing. It’s good honest fun.

For the record, I am a socialist and would totally accept free stuff from Adidas.*

* in my size only.
In the 90’s I would have… these days I’m all about the skateboard brands (even though I don’t skate hah!)

Yeah I found those adds so silly… Tom morello was innovative 20 years ago. Now I find him just annoying. And weird he would be trying to make a buck doing online guitar lessons!

As I feel like I'm starting to understand modular/eurorack a bit better, I'm going from "how do all these weird things work?" to "how do I integrate the bass guitar with all these weird things?" I'd love to hear thoughts from everyone (whether eurorack users or not) about how you approach integrating the bass with synth stuff. Not mechanically like what pedals/etc you use (though that info is always welcome), but almost more philosophically.

I would say, philosophically, mostly I integrate bass into modular as though the bass is a complex oscillator and a controller, often at the same time.

As a controller, you have modules that can
-control envelopes
-detect transients
-detect pitch or
-broader frequency ranges

That short list, combined with the bass sound source, combined with effects, is a world of options.

Think of it as a matrix:

On the x axis you have
-Envelopes
-pitch
-transients controlling ADSR or sequncers or lfos controlling the
-frequency pocketed envelopes

on the y axis you have:
-bit/sample crush
-chorus
-delay
-dirt
-filter
-flange
-granular
-phaser
-reverb
-trem/stutter
-vibrato…

in the cells, you have what is being controlled, depth, speed, mix, or other aspect of the effect

Thats the integration conceptual model I use.

Of course, I also use modulations etc. that are tempo syncd, controlled by an expression pedal, etc. as well.

Gear specific, Im selling off my modular. Ive just run in to too many needs for totally bespoke setups where Im now all using Zoia and VCV Rack.
