@hieronymous Zombi was great last night! I had never really listened to them much beyond the clip you posted, and I really enjoyed them. Aside from the music being good, it also made me think about what might be possible somewhere in the distant future for the garbage I make.
I was right up front against the rail, being that close to the drummer was awesome. I don't know a thing about drums, but I thought he was great and I always prefer to hear the acoustic sound of a kit rather than the amplified sound, when possible.
I'm looking forward to tomorrow night's show!

Nice! Glad you got to see them. I personally find them very inspiring - wow, just a bassist and drummer can make music?!!

He's using the 8-string, then he steps over towards the keyboards but actually just steps on a pedal, adding some octave stuff to the bass?

Tomorrow night, though I'll have to drive down there tomorrow then back first thing Sunday which is making me have doubts. It's nearly seven hours each way. Honestly seeing Zombi again is a big motivator because I've already seen Om quite a few times.
Om was very good, as usual. Not the best I've seen them play, but certainly not bad or even anything close to that. There were a few rough spots and the tempo was slower than usual, though that much at least was clearly intentional. I can't help but wonder if that choice is influenced by all the dub stuff Al has been working on.
I don't know, 7 hours is a long way to go for an opening act! This is the second time they're touring, hopefully they will tour again next year.
way back when (like 1971/2 or something), there was band called grandma in l.a. that was just a bass player/singer and a drummer. they played on a show called elliot mintz's headshop (yeah, i think it's the same elliot mintz that ended up working for lennon).
anyway, wacky band. drummer had an enormous drumset with massive cymbal *trees*.
being 15/16 or so, i scoffed . . . ah youth
and which just goes to show that people have been pushing the envelope for a long time.
There is a recent thread around here somewhere about drummer/bass-only bands. Bigger list than you might think.
I think I remember that thread! Actually, if it's recent, maybe not lol. I think I'm thinking of the "bands with two bassists" thread - another one of my favorite bands, Magma, is on that list.
I had an interesting experience on YouTube today. I posted another ZOMBI clip - this is one where Steve Moore is playing both bass and synth at the same time - I purposely did it portrait instead of landscape, planning to put it in my "stories" on Instagram. It's so short, it ended up going to "Shorts" on YT - different than a normal video. I noticed soon after that it was getting lots of views - 50, then 100, ultimately about 150 in 2 hours - and 2 likes, then 2 dislikes, then 3 dislikes - then later, I noticed one of the likes disappeared! F these people, I made it private. They don't deserve to witness that. The whole thing is stupid, but interesting at the same time. Why the hate? What kind of videos succeed? Is it worth trying to figure out? It's almost like it's more a kind of performance for the sake of the medium, rather than the medium expressing a performance?
Unless you need to harness social media to put bread on the table, IMO the answer is no.
YouTube's views and like-tracking algorithm is weird and always feels rigged to me. I think it's based on some statistical thing instead of just counting. YouTube in general is irritating and makes me want to search for a new platform. Not like it matters, the stuff I upload never blows up anyway, which is fine by me.
It's definitely not a priority for me, but at the same time, I've been putting my music online for almost 20 years now, so it's definitely worth thinking about for me. I have two videos that have a fair amount of views. I didn't do anything different for them, just for some reason they got picked up by an algorithm. One is short (1 minute), one is a bass cover. I don't really want to play the game of trying to figure out what works. It's fun to make videos when I'm in the mood/something works. Views and likes definitely feel good lol - I see why kids get hooked! I'm glad I have context for it so it doesn't sting so bad when it doesn't work - which is most of the time!
I may have found a used Hydrasynth Desktop at a price I couldn't resist. Maybe it even got delivered yesterday. These things might have happened, but then again they might not. Some things are simply unknowable.
duping sounds on two hydra engines and having slight variations of lfo speed and panning, etc., and playing them together can sound amazing.
Yes it is very weird how certain videos do well and others don't. This is the video I have up with the most views. For a while it was on my YouTube homepage, which I suspect is why it got lots of views. I made this 6 years ago (!) now using my then new Mother 32. How time flies.
That kind of slightly melancholy synth music with a train ride video works for me :shrug: Also having "girl" in the title might have helped with popularity
I'm trying to figure out why I got a new YouTube subscriber yesterday. I posted one random video a year ago showing a technique with 0-Ctrl. Before that, nothing since 2017, and those were just a logo and the quick-track-every-few-days music I was dumping on my website.
I don't usually do "warnings" but this video has some really nasty flashes. Musically, though, it's very cool:

Funny thing is I didn't know what to call that track until I started putting the video together and decided to end it with the 35mm photo of the girl standing on the platform at King St. Metro Station in Alexandria, VA. I remember shooting that photo; I had just stepped out of the train onto the platform with my camera around my neck and this girl was standing there facing away from me with the buildings in the background, so I quick lifted up the camera and snapped the shot, then turned and walked away. Never saw her face, and the photo kind of haunted me. So I figured it would be the name of the track.
ETA: I also recorded the entire track while sitting in the darkroom where that photo print was made, because I volunteered to watch the photo gallery that day and brought some synth gear with me to pass the time.
